Chapter 61
jason set up the table that went across the bed and I got the sandwiches and the water and placed them on it. Hunter scooted to the side and raised the head end of the bed so he was sitting up. He tapped on the mattress next to him as he looked at me. I hesitated, looking at all the wires and beeping machines.
“I’m not that fail,” he told me. Jason gave me a little nudge and I folded and sat down next to Hunter trying to keep a little space between us. I took a sandwich, unwrapped it and divided it in half, I gave one half of it to Hunter. He looked at it and then on the other half that I had started in on. “Why can’t I have a whole one?” he asked, sounding like a hurt puppy. Jason chuckled as he had his mouth full.
“The nurse told Clair you should take it slow and pace yourself. You can start with half and then you can have another half if you are still hungry.” I told him.
“If I can have another, why can’t I have it from the start? It makes no difference,” he told me.
“Good that you see it that way, then it doesn’t matter if you get the second half later,” I insisted. Jason started to laugh
“We should hire you to do our negotiations, Hann,” he chuckled. Hunter just shook his head and kissed my temple before starting in on the food.
“This is amazing,” he said with his mouth full. I smiled at him, it eased my worry to see him eating.
“Hana worked hard to make them,” Jason said after drinking half a bottle of water in one go.
“You made them?* Hunter asked.
“I did. I needed to do something while waiting for news about you,” I told him and brushed some crumbs out of his beard.
Why w
weren’t you resting?” he asked. I scoffed.
“I was worried, I needed to do something.”
“Is that why you were sleeping when I woke up? Have you slept at all? Maybe Jason should take you home?” he suggested.
“No, he shouldn’t. I have slept enough. Eat your food.” Jason looked happy as he listened to us bickering back and forth. Everyone knew it came from a place of caring and fun. We had all had a couple of rough days in different ways and we knew we would have some ahead of us. But at this moment, we decided to just be happy for a while. When the food was eaten and they talked and joked, I got up and started cleaning away the wrappers and empty bottles as the door opened and the doctor walked in.
“Mr Gardner, you look a lot better,” he said after introducing himself to Hunter
“I feel better. Thank you for fixing me up,” Hunter said. “When can I go home?” The doctor laughed.
“Eager to get away? Well, things are looking better. Blood count looks a lot better, no fever and you seem to be able to keep a normal conversation going. I would say we will start to decrease your heavy painkillers and ease you over to regular ones overnight. If everything looks good in the morning, you can go home,” the doctor told them.
“I’ll take it,” Hunter agreed. The doctor left and a nurse came in and took away some of the tubes and machines.
“I’m heading over to the office and then I’m going home. I will be back in the morning to get your sorry ass out of here,” lason said. “Do you want home?” he asked me.
“No, I will stay. But thanks, 1 answered.
“Are you sure? You should make sure to get some rest,” Hunter said.
me to drive you
“I’m sure,” 1 followed Jason to the door. “Thank you for everything, both yesterday and today. I wouldn’t have made it through without you,” I told him and kissed him on the cheek. I got the pleasure of watching the stale warrior blush.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, take care of him,” Jason said before hurrying away. I smiled as I walked back to Hunter.
“Are you trying to make me jealous, sweetness?” he asked and reached for my hand. I gave it to him and sat down on the edge of his bed
“I’m not. He is just a very sweet man and I feel like he doesn’t get credit for it,” I said.
“I’m happy you see it. You are right, not many do,” Hunter said. He then looked at me and pushed the button to call the nurse.
“Are you okay?” I asked, thinking he needed help.
Chapter 61
“I’m fine. But before we can relax for the evening. I need to do something,” he said. A nurse knocked on the door and stepped inside.
“Did you need something, Mr. Gardner?” she asked.
“Yes, could you please get me a form to change my medical contact person and who have the right to make medical decisions for me?” he asked her.
y to come as well?” she asked.
*Sure, do you want our notary
“Yes, that would be very helpful,” he told her. She nodded and walked away.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“Today two persons can make decisions for me if I can’t. In my profession it’s prudent. As you can see,” he told me with a smile. I didn’t like where this was going. But if he needed to do this, I wouldn’t object. “The first one is Jason. I think that doesn’t need explanation. The other one is Simon. I’m going to blame that on a need to tie him to my life. But I can’t let him have that power any longer. If Jason hadn’t been here today, but Simon had, I don’t know if I would still be alive. I will take him out, but I would like to put you in his place.”
“Me?” I asked, stunned.
“Yes, I would trust you with my life without hesitation. You will do right by me,” he told me.
“I will do my best,” I told him, trying not to cry. He caressed my cheek. There was a knock on the door and the nurse came back in with an older woman. She introduced herself as Mrs. Kender. Mrs. Kender went through the paperwork with Hunter and me. Making sure we knew what Hunter was doing. Twenty minutes later she left with the signed paper and I started convincing Hunter he should rest. It was getting late and I saw that he was getting tired. I had managed to get him to lower the bed into a lying position as the nurse brought in his evening medication.
-Would
you like an extra pillow and blanket?” she asked.
“That would be amazing, thank you,” I said and moments later she was back with it. I walked over to the small sofa. It was just big enough for two people to sit on it. But I could curl up and kind of fit on it.
“Where are you going?” Hunter asked.
“To the sofa.” I told him.
“Why?”
“To sleep”
“Why would you sleep on that thing? You will sleep with me in the bed,” he said. He was adjusting himself to make room for me. I hesitated, looking at the remaining wires that still connected him to the machines by his bed. “I’m not that fragile,” he told me as if he had read my mind. I nodded and put the pillow on his bed and carefully climbed on and lay down next to him. It felt a little strange. I was on the wrong side of the bed from how we usually slept and it was also the side where he had been shot. It had been better if I had been able to use the other side of the bed, but that was where all the wires and machines were. So I was happy with where I was. Instead of me putting my head on his shoulder and him wrapping me up in his arms, as was our routine. I placed a kiss beside his dressings and took his hand and intertwined our fingers. It was more than I had thought I would be able to get.
“You really had me worried,” I told him in the darkness
“I know, sweetness. And I’m sorry for that,” he said. I shook my head. I wasn’t trying to make him feel bad or make him apologise. I just needed him to know how I
felt.
“I would be grateful if you didn’t do that again for a while,” I told him. I could hear him chuckle.
“I can agree to that. You did good, Hana. You did as I told you,” he said. Again, I shook my head
“I shouldn’t have left you alone,” I objected, ventilating my bad conscience.
“We talked about this, Hana. Y
You don’t stand and fight, I do that part.”
“But I almost lost you,” I told him and I heard my voice break.
“I have been through a lot worse, Sweetness. And I will get through ten times more if it keeps you from having to live through it. And you helped me more than you know. You were with me when I needed you,” he told me. That broke the last of my resistance and I turned on my side and curled up and put my head against his arm as I clung to his hand and cried. Hunter did his best to comfort me, I could feel his frustration in his limited use of his arms. He rubbed his thumb on my hand that was linked with his and placed kisses on top of my head. It was more than enough for me.
