He hit send, but the message didn’t go through. A red exclamation mark appeared on the screen, glaring and harsh.
She had blocked him.
Without hesitation, Lucas immediately tried calling Jennifer, but the call wouldn’t connect.
Standing on the balcony, he stared out into the dark night, feeling an inexplicable anger spreading through his chest.
He was the one who had pushed her away, the one who had found someone new. He was the one who got tired of her and didn’t want her clinging to him.
Now, everything had gone exactly as he wanted.
But somehow, he didn’t feel as happy as he’d imagined.
After arriving in the new city, I didn’t reach out to William right away. Instead, I met up with my best friend from college, Caroline.
I wanted to share my secret with her, but I hadn’t yet figured out how to tell her.
Unexpectedly, at the welcome dinner Caroline organized for me, I ran into William.
He stood at the doorway of the private room in a black business suit, with a matching coat draped over his arm.
After all these years, he looked even more handsome and composed than he had in college.
Now, he was my fiancé..
My checks flushed, and I lowered my gaze, my fingers nervously twisting the lace on my dress hem. I could even feel a slight sweat on my back
Caroline, however, was thrilled and immediately exclaimed, “William, what are you doing here?”
“I was here for a business meeting tonight. When I saw some old classmates, I thought I’d stop by uninvited,” William said, his gaze settling on me for few moments before he finally locked away.
“You all don’t mind me joining, do you?”
“Of course not!” Everyone responded eagerly. “We’d be inviting you if you hadn’t shown up!”
William smiled and stepped inside. “Then I won’t be shy.”
He ended up sitting directly across from me
All the classmates greeted him and caught up excitedly.
But I kept my head down the whole time, too shy to meet his eyes.
William, however, didn’t seem inclined to let it go.
“Jennifer, after all these years, have we grown distant?” he asked suddenly, calling me by name.
I looked up instinctively, only to meet his eyes, which held a faint, warm smile.
My face turned red, and I felt the heat spread to the back of my neck.
After a moment, I stood up, raising my glass. “William, long time no see.”
