“Lucas, if you keep drinking like this, do you even care about your life?”
“Don’t you know how worried we’ve all been about you lately?”
A friend held down the bottle, trying to reason with him. “We just called Lydia, and she’s coming to take you home. Please, stop drinking, okay?”
Lucas suddenly felt a wave of disgust at the mention of Lydia’s name.
He pushed his friend away, then threw the bottle to the ground, shattering it.
“Who told you to call her? Did I ask her to come?”
“She’s your girlfriend. Who else should we call?”
“My girlfriend? Since when?” Lucas sneered. “Don’t you all know who my real girlfriend is?”
The friends exchanged glances. “Lucas, have you forgotten? You and Jennifer already broke up…”
“Yeah, you even told us in the group chat to call Lydia your girlfriend.”
“Jennifer even congratulated you before she left the group.”
“Aren’t you and Lydia supposed to be getting engaged?”
“There won’t be an engagement.”
Lucas motioned for another bottle.
Lucas, you really shouldn’t drink anymore…”
Do you think I’ll listen to you?
“No, you never listen to us. You only ever listened to Jennifer.”
by now. You wouldn’t be drinking yourself into the hospital.”
“II Jennifer were still around, you would’ve gone home with her by
Lucas stayed silent, but he didn’t deny it.
One friend took out his phone. “I’m calling Jennifer right now.”
“If even she can’t get through to you, then we really don’t know what else to do.”
But to everyone’s surprise, the call didn’t go through.
One by one, each friend tried calling.
All of their numbers had been blocked by Jennifer,
The air felt like it was turning to ice,
“Maybe Jennifer is really angry,” someone said.
“Of course she’s angry, Lucas. You’re the one who broke up with her, then got together with her stepsister.”
“Anyone would feel hurt and betrayed by that.”
“She’s been living alone this whole time.
“And recently, on her mother’s death anniversary, my sister saw her coming back from the cemetery, her eyes swollen from crying” “Lucas, maybe you should go to her apartment and talk to her…”
Lucas suddenly remembered the day Jennifer moved out of Leo’s house.
She had dragged two large suitcases, never looking back.
That was supposed to be her home, with her family.
But eventually, it became Lydia and her mother’s home.
Her father became Lydia’s father, too,
And Lucas, at the time, was foolishly drawn to the younger, softer Lydia. And he had abandoned her.
