Nadia was about to change into slippers and paused in her tracks, but the collected herself quickly. She put on the cotton slippers and looked up at him, “I have an experiment class today. I had to go to the construction site. It’s not easy to walk in high heels, so I wore flats.”

Matthew looked at the trench coat Nadia was wearing and asked, “You wore a trench coat to the construction site?”

Nadia lived in a large single–bedroom apartment. The kitchen and bathroom were side by side near the entrance. There was a small sofa and coffee table in the living room, and there was a big king–size bed and a sealed balcony further into the apartment. The interior decoration was simple and bright, with a fresh and slightly rural style. One could see all the furnishing of the apartment at a glance.
Nadia had the same habit when living alone as when she was still married to Matthew. She had a free and casual soul. Her room was clean and tidy. but there were also some small objects placed here and there randomly, such as on the coffee table. The table was spotless, but the woven storage baskets on the elegant white table were stuffed with miscellaneous objects. In the pile of things, Matthew saw a piece of paper that seemed to be a check–up report. He frowned slightly and walked toward the coffee table.
Nadia couldn’t help following Matthew’s gaze. When she saw the check–up report in the storage basket, her heart skipped a beat. She reached out and grabbed the corner of Matthew’s clothes instinctively.
Matthew turned around to look at her with doubt in his brown eyel
Nadia tried her best to remain calm and smiled at him. “By the way, you haven’t eaten yet, have you?”
She put away the bag that she had almost taken out quietly and did not notice that the screen of her phone, which was still in the bag, flashed

At that time, Nadia was taking a taxi to the hospital. On the phone, Kathleen could hear clearly that Nadia sounded a little weak. Nadia was obviously flustered. Nadia comforted her on the phone that she was fine, that she was having a slight stomachache and wanted to go to the hospital to have a check–up. When the results came out, Nadia sent Kathleen the results as soon as possible to reassure her. But at that time, Kathleen was busy with work. When she saw the report, she was relieved but did not have the time to reply immediately. Now that she was finally free, Kathleen remembered that Nadia only said that there was no problem with the report, but nothing about the baby. She didn’t tell Kathleen how the baby was or how she was now, Kathleen was anxious and texted her to ask about her condition, but Nadia never replied.
When she called Nadia now, Nadia didn’t answer her phone. Kathleen was already scared out of her wits by the various possibilities in her mind. She didn’t know what had happened to Nadia. After dialing another call and getting no response from Nadia, Kathleen called Darrell instead
Darrell picked up after a few rings.
“Hello?”
When Darrell’s clear voice came from the other end of the line, Kathleen sounded so anxious that she was about to cry. “Darrell, are you at home now? Can you check on Nadia for me?
Darrell was eating when Nadia called him. He froze. “What happened!”
“I don’t know. Nadia kept throwing up at noon. Later, she said that she was bleeding a little, so she went to the hospital. At that time, I was busy and didn’t have time to check up on her condition in time. I don’t know how she is now. She didn’t reply to my Line messages, didn’t answer my video calls, and didn’t answer her phone” Kathleen was so anxious that she was about to cry. “I’m worried about her. Can you go to her apartment to check on her for me?”
“Sure, Darrell put down his fork and stood up. “Don’t worry, I go take a look first. I’ll call you back later.”
I hung up the phone. He grabbed his coat and key from the hanger and left immediately.

At Nadia’s apartment, Matthew saw the light in the bag behind Nadia and raised his chin slightly to gesture at her bag. “Your phone is ringing.”
Nadia turned to look at her bag.

Seeing the hesitation on Nadia’s face, Matthew turned to look at the bag behind her, glanced at it, and then looked at her face. “Are you hiding something from me?”

She felt her phone, but the medicine and report were right on top of her hand. She tried to pull her phone out with as little movement as possible. Matthew stepped forward and reached out to open her bag. Nadia was so shocked that she grabbed his hand before he could do so.
Matthew felt a slightly cold touch on his skin. He looked at her and asked, “Why is your hand so cold?”
“It’s…. It’s getting colder lately.” Nadia paused unconsciously and let go of Matthew’s hand hesitantly.
Matthew didn’t insist on opening her bag. He just looked at Nadia and asked, “Haven’t you grown much stronger in the past two years?”
“Maybe I’m just not used to the weather here yet, Nadia said. Her hand, which was holding the phone in her bag, tightened slightly. She was hesitating whether to pull it out or not. Her heart was beating fast because of such hesitation.
Matthew frowned slightly and looked at her. “You’ve lost a lot of weight. I remember that you used to be able to quickly adapt to a new environment.”
