Chapter 83
I hated that we were forced to have this discussion. I wasn’t ready for it, I don’t know if Hana was ready either. We had been happy with letting our relationship evolve naturally. When I brought her home with me the night they had tried to break into her apartment, I had fully intended it to be a temporary. But then everything he had happened and now I didn’t know if I could let her go. How could I go to bed each night alone? I looked at Hana sitting next to me. She looked nervous and was watching her hands in her lap.
“Hana, I love you. Nothing we decide tonight will change it. Our relationship is built on more than just proximity,” I said. Hana looked up at me with a weak smile.
“I love
too. And I agree with you. I just get this uncomfortable feeling about this,” she told me,

g like we are and ignore everything Seymour said,” I suggested. Her imile grew.
“I would like that. But it feels like the cowardly way out.” I hummed. She was right and despite what she thought about herself, I knew she would never take the
eward’s way out
“Okay, so let’s do this. If I asked you to move in with me. Not temporary, not as a way to keep you safe. Just because I like to spend every day with you. What would you say?” I asked.
“I would accept I know we are moving fast and I know I should be out there, makin as an independent woman. But I’m just happy with you and it feels idiotic to pass on happiness because it does not match a timeline,” she said. The relief that filled me made me understand how much I had feared her answer. Hana was on the same page as me, and that was all I cared about. Until I saw the slight hesitation in her eyes.
“But?” I asked. She looked down in her lap and shook her head. “Sweetness, you need to tell me,” I insisted. She shook her head again. “Hana. It’s fine, tell me.” She looked up at me and sighed.
“But would that be the selfish decision?” she asked. I understood what she was saying. If we could decide and only take us into consideration, I would have her moved in tomorrow. But now we had this trial and with it there were more things to think about. I didn’t care much about if the prosecutors had to work harder to get a conviction. With the evidence we had provided them, they should be able to make it work. But I did care about Hana. And if Seymour said she would have a harder time being a witness, I knew that was the truth.
“Fuck.” I murmured.
“Yeah,” Hana agreed.
“I don’t want you to move out.”
“I really don’t like the idea either. But it may be the best option,” she said. “It will be temporary,” she added. “How long can this thing take, anyway?”
“A year, maybe two if we are unlucky and the defence tries to drag it out,” I said.
“Oh. I was thinking a couple of months at the most.“
“Maybe we can move in together after some time, if it looks more natural,” I suggested..
“True, but we shouldn’t rely on it,” she pointed out.
“Agreed. If we do this, we need to prepare that we won’t be able to live together for a couple of years,” I agreed..
“But we can visit each other, right?” she asked, and I heard the same fear I felt in her voice..
“Of course, and spend the night. Maybe restrict it to the weekend for sleep overs so we don’t overdo it, I told her.
“And we will go on dates?” she asked.
“As often as we like. And we can test and talk on the phone every night, like we did before,” I told her. She nodded, but looked devastated. I reached out and pulled her into my lap and she curled in on herself and cuddled closer. “We will make it work, sweetness. I’m not letting you go now that I have found you,” I promised her
“I’m not letting you go either. You are stuck with me now,” she told me. We sat like that for a while, trying to adjust to what we had arrived at
“I’m going to need to call someone that can do a cleansing of my apartment. I think it has some bad mojo on it,” Hana told me. It took me a moment to wrap my head around what she had said.
“Had mojo?” I asked.

“Yeah. It’s attracting crazy people to knock on my door,” she explained. I chuckled as I understood what she was telling

I meant what I said I won’t let you go

I can’t stay in one of your places for that long, Hunter. What if you need it for your clients? I can’t put someone else in danger,” she objected.
“We have more than one safe house.” I pointed out.
“And after living there for a year or two with this circus going on, low safe do you think it will be? I’m assuming that one of the most important characteristics of a place like that is that no one knows where it’s located,” she said. She was right, but I didn’t like to admit
“You aren’t going back to that joke of an apartment. We will just have to find another place for you to live. You have a good job that pays reasonably. I have some contacts. We should have some places we can look at within a week. Just let me know your budget. Or do you want to buy something with a part of the money you got?” I asked her.
“But you have paid the rent on my place for seven months,” she said.
“That means there won’t be an issue with you breaking the I
So buying or renting?” he asked.
Seems wasteful to buy when I know I will move mul ngain. So renting,” she decided. I hummed and kissed the top of her head.
“I will text Seymour and let him know we are looking for an apartment for you,” I told her.
“Okay.” But I didn’t move. I wasn’t ready just yet. I needed to get my emotions under control and I found it easier to do with Hana close to me. I hated all of this. I felt like someone was forcing me to do things I didn’t want to do, and it had me feeling useless. I should be able to solve all of this in a better way, I thought. I

I sent the text to Seymour and reminded myself none of this was his fault.
5: Good. I think that was the best decision in the current situation. I’m sorry.
I shook my head and put the phone away.
“He thinks we did the right thing. But he is sorry,” I told Hana.
“It’s not his fault. He is just looking out for us,” he said.
“I know,” Lagreed.
“So I don’t have to worry about you punching him out cold?” she asked. I looked down at her and saw her smiling. I chuckled.
“No, sweetness, I won’t punch him. I will do my best to not take out my had mood regarding this on him,” I said.
“Good. I like him. He’s a nice man.” I pretended to sigh.
“You need to stop falling in love with the men working for me,” I complained. Hana giggled and it made me feel better.
“Now you are being silly. I’m in love with you and anyone can see he worships his wife,” she told me. I nodded. I was forming a plan in my head to make sure Hana was safe. “You have to promise me not to start eating all the junk food again,” she said. “And no working all hours of the day.”
“I will do my best with work. The food… I will limit my use of take out,” I agreed.
“Just so you know, I have bribed both Clair and Jason, so they will let me know if you work more than you should. And I get you might not want to cook, but go down and let Chef feed you.” I looked down at her.
“You have bribed Clair and Jason?” I asked, Jason I wasn’t surprised to hear. Hana could promise him a cupcake a week and the idiot would sell me out. But Clair. Hana shrugged. “Fine,” I relented. “But then you need to promise me that you will let me know when you go out on the town and that you won’t complain if I tell you I will pick you up when you are done,” I said.
“I can do that,” she agreed.
“And you will come with me to the shelter and pick out a cat,” I added in the spur of the moment. Hana froze in my lap.

“A–n cat” she asked.
“Yes, I don’t want you to feel lonely and you will be working from home and I think you will enjoy its company,” I insisted.
“I don’t plan to get you a stuffed toy, sweetness. If you feel you don’t have time for it, it can always come

“Not would love a cat and I will make sure I take care of it and have time for it,” she told me. I smiled. I knew it was a dream of hers.
“And when you come to stay over here, you can bring the cat so it won’t need to be alone. We will make sure it has things in both places.”
“Thank you Hunter.”
