Chapter 37
Noelle
1 take a step back. “I came here to negotiate, but I’m guessing negotiating with a savage like you is impossible.”
He tilts his head. “Ah, little Noelle, thinking you can talk your way out of this, huh?”
When I don’t answer, he laughs. “Not very talkative, are you now that your ex–mate is dead? Well, you will meet him again soon. Also, my name is Jackal, and it has been a pleasure meeting you, but now you gotta go-”
Jackal is cut off by a strange light, and I gasp when arms appear out of nowhere and pull me into the light–is this a freaking portal?!
I scream at the top of my lungs as I’m ripped through space and time until, finally, I land in Edward’s arms. He blinks a few times before a smile spreads over his lips.
“Master Lucian, I succeeded in bringing your mate back to the mansion.”
“I’m very proud of you, Edward,” says
before I see him coming into view with a scowl on his face. “And you! Why the
hell did you pay a visit to the vampires alone?! My brother is dead because of your stupidity!”
I open my mouth but close it since he is right. Sebastian is dead because of me, and there’s nothing I can say to bring him back. I deserve my mate’s anger and hang my head, hoping he will smack me.
But he doesn’t.
Instead, there’s a heavy sigh. “Edward,” Lucian says, his voice sounding like he is tired beyond measure. “Take Noelle to her room.”
“Will do.”
Edward keeps me in his arms and carries me bridal style to the room I’ve been sleeping in. And, since I know I’m a failure of a future Alpha, I don’t even mind him treating me like a damsel in distress. I even slump my body…something which makes him chuckle at me.
“You’re being very dramatic tonight, Alpha Noelle.”
“Can you blame me? And please don’t call me Alpha. Sebastian is dead because of me.”
“I don’t blame you for feeling sad. All I’m saying is that you can’t let this kill your spirit. We are oficially at war with the vampires, and we can’t afford you sulking. I know it may sound harsh, but please save the sadness for later after we have dealt with Jackal and his men.”
I arch an eyebrow. “Jackal… Do you know him?”
“I’m a vampire, and so is my father, and yes, we know who he is and what he stands for. And trust me, me and my father are nothing like Jackal.”
“I’m glad,” I shudder in Edward’s arms. “He… He is very strong.”
“He is very old and talented with different kinds of magic. Beating him will be hard, but I do believe you and Lucian together are stronger than Jackal… He may try to revive Sebastian, though. Necromancy isn’t beneath him, and it would add a powerful ally to his side.”
I stiffen in Edward’s arms, his words echoing in my ears. “Revive Sebastian? Necromancy?”
He nods solemnly, his expression grave. “Yes, Jackal has studied all forms of magic – light and dark. He will likely use his

knowledge to turn Sebastian into one of his minions.”

A cold shiver runs down my spine. The thought of seeing Sebastian again, but as an enemy, is too painful to bear.
“We can’t…we can’t let that happen,” I manage to stutter out.
“I’m afraid it might already be happening, Alpha. Sebastian’s body was left behind, and Jackal wouldn’t miss this opportunity for all the money in the world. He is probably already working on his twisted resurrection spell. We will have to act fast.”
“Then we have to stop him; we can’t let Sebastian be used like that!”
Edward sighs. “Sadly, there’s nothing we can do right now. We will have to think of a plan later. For now, the best you can do is rest and recover your energy.”
“But Sebastian…”
Edward’s face grows sad. “I know it’s hard accepting the death of someone you knew, especially someone you used to live with and were in love with. But the supernatural world is harsh, and the best way to survive is to grow tough skin and
move forward. As we speak, the pack needs a strong Alpha, and that’s you, Noelle.”
Tears sting behind my eyelids. “I’m not the Alpha yet…”
“But you will be tomorrow morning. Lucian moved the wedding.”
I pout. “I don’t deserve to marry him after this, though.”
but yes,
it might take some time to get on his good side again. He and Sebastian might Edward laughs. “He still loves you, have had a complicated relationship, but it was still his brother who died today.”
“Lucian will never forgive me.”
“What is there to forgive? Lucian doesn’t blame you for Sebastian’s death. He chose to follow you.”
“He was actually compelled to lead you there.”
“There you go,” Edward says. “Not your fault.”
“Still feels like it.”
“Nah,
you
can’t think like that. Now head back to your room and rest up.”
I could argue about this with Edward all day, but that won’t solve anything so I walk inside of my room, determined to sleep and hopefully discover this was all a nightmare by tomorrow.
But life isn’t that kind.
I wake up to blaring sunlight pouring through the window, the harsh brightness serving as a rude reminder of how much I suck as a person.
And as if that isn’t enough there’s someone banging on my door while crying. It sounds like a woman and three seconds later, I realize its Erin.
“How could you bring Sebastian to the vampires? Wasn’t it enough to humiliate me yesterday?” I hear her sag against the door. She is crying too much to make sense, but I hear her last sentence loud and clear, “I know I’ve been a bitch towards you, but didn’t have to kill my mate because of it. He… He didn’t deserve to die.”
you
My heart breaks for her. Killing Sebastian was never my intention, yet I can’t look away from the fact that it’s my fault that
he is dead.

I’m… I’m a murderer, not an Alpha.
With that mindset, I walk towards the door. I fell asleep with my clothes on and didn’t even bother to wash away my makeup. I bet its all over my face and when I open the door, Erin slaps the hell out my face.
