Chapter 27
Hearing this from Seth, Jenna’s expression darkened. “Are you blaming me for keeping Ben? If I hadn’t kept Ben, do you think he’d have a good life with Layla?
“She’s bad luck. She’s been like that since she was a child. She caused the death of her parents. If she stays around you and Ben for too long, neither of you will have a good end!”
Seth couldn’t bring himself to believe her.
Even if there was any truth to such superstitions, the four years he spent with Layla were some of the best of his life. His career soared, everything went smoothly, and his family was happy.
Layla was far from a disaster.
He lowered his gaze at Jenna and said, “Since you’re fine, take care of yourself. I’ll come back to check on you tomorrow.”
With that, he turned to leave.
Jenna called after him, “Seth, aren’t you going to check on Clarissa’s wound before leaving? Is this how a fiancé should behave?”
Without turning around, Seth replied with an icy tone, “If she dares to provoke Layla, she should be able to handle it.”
Watching Seth walk away, Clarissa’s crying intensified.
“Jenna, ever since Layla came back, Seth’s been distancing himself from me. Do you think he’s planning to get back together with her?” Clarissa asked as soon as Seth left.
Jenna’s face immediately darkened. “If he dares. But I won’t allow it. Layla’s nothing but bad luck. I’ll never let her back into the Parker family!”
Hearing this, a brief flicker of triumph passed through Clarissa’s eyes, but it quickly disappeared.
With Jenna supporting her, she was certain that one day, she would become the real Mrs.
Parker.
Layla entered Sylvia’s ward, trying her best to mask her emotions, but Sylvia could clearly see through her.
“Who did you see? You look terrible,” Sylvia asked with concern.
Layla didn’t want to say anything at first, but when she saw Sylvia’s eyes narrowing with that‘ I’ll make you tell the truth‘ look, she had no choice but to confess.
Chapter 27
“It was Seth. He came to donate blood for Clarissa,” she retorted. “It was Seth. He came to
Sylvia’s anger flared up as she slammed her fist onto the bed. “Those two scumbags are still at it? Once I’m better, I’ll deal with them!”
Layla forced a smile. ‘Forget about me for now. Look at how much weight you’ve lost after just a few days away. You’ve become so thin.”
“It’s those poor conditions over there. The food was so disgusting that I couldn’t eat it. If I get another case there, no amount of commission will make me go back,” Sylvia grumbled.
Layla opened the thermos and handed her a spoon. “Here’s some oatmeal. Eat a bit now. I’ll make you mushroom soup tomorrow. It’s best to stick to liquid foods for now. Once you’re fully recovered, we’ll talk about meats and bigger meals.”
Sylvia looked up at her with a pout. “When I’m better, you’re going to make me glazed pork ribs and grilled lobster, right?”
“Sure I’ll make sure you get everything you want,” Layla replied with a grin.
Although it was just some simple oatmeal, Sylvia ate it like it was a feast, savoring every bite. She ate while saying, “Laylie, you know, that bastard Seth… Clarissa gave up her chance to be on the stage because of him, and that’s why he divorced you. Do you think if he knew your hand was ruined because of him, and you can never pick up a paintbrush again, he’d regret divorcing you?”
Layla answered firmly, “He won’t regret it. A marriage without love can’t be regretted.”
Sylvia growled, “That scumbag! I want to cut him where it hurts. You sold your mom’s only legacy to fund him, and now he’s thriving while throwing away the woman who stood by him. Even in a tragic romance novel, they wouldn’t dare write something like this.”
Layla smiled faintly, indifferent. “It’s all in the past. Don’t bring it up again. Right now, I just want to focus on curing Daisy’s illness and living well in the present. As for the rest, I couldn’t care less.”
Layla stayed with Sylvia until late before finally heading home.
