Chapter 49 – The Trial of Mr. Young
Interviewers and reporters swarmed outside the courthouse, their voices a cacophony of questions, shouts, and flashes of cameras. As the trail of Sebastian Young got underway, there was a sense of tension in the building. There were many people in the courtroom, the prosecution team sat with assurance on one side, headed by Victor Lanning, Emily Roberts’s lawyer, a shrewd, no–nonsense man.
Conversely, Sebastian sat next to his defense lawyer, Clara Woods, who had a composed yet resolute expression on her face as they got ready to contest the two separate charges of attempted first–degree murder on Emily Roberts.
The judge, an imposing man with a stoic expression, banged his gavel,
“Order in the courtroom. The trial will now proceed”
Victor Lanning rose to address the court,
“Your Honor, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, today we are here to ensure justice is served. for Emily Roberts”
“We have compelling evidence against Mr. Young, proving beyond a reasonable doubt that he attempted to harm her, not once, but twice. I call on Bailey Carter as our first witness”
Bailey’s face was white but determined as she was led to the witness stand. She avoided. looking at Sebastian as she sat down after being sworn in.
Victor approached her,
“Ms. Carter, can you describe your relationship with the victim, Emily Roberts?”
“We’ve been best friends for over ten years” Bailey said, her voice steady,
“I know her better than anyone”
“And what can you tell us about her relationship with the defendant, Mr. Young?”
Bailey hesitated, then took a deep breath,
“It was… toxic. They had a tumultuous on–again, off–again relationship, Sebastian was possessive, and their fights were often intense”
Victor nodded,
“And on the day of her wedding, can you recount what happened?”
Bailey’s hands trembled slightly as she recounted the events,
“Emily was in her bridal suite. She received a message from Sebastian, demanding she meet
him at the deserted exit of the venue”

“She was reluctant, but he threatened to come to the wedding if she didn’t. I tried to stop her, but she said she didn’t want him causing a scene. She left… and minutes later, I found her on the ground, covered in blood”
“Did she mention feeling threatened by Mr. Young before this incident?” Victor asked.
“Yes” Bailey said firmly,
“She told me he was unpredictable and that she feared he might hurt her if he didn’t get his way”
Victor handed a printed document to the court clerk,
“Your Honor, I submit into evidence the chat logs provided by Ms. Carter from Emily’s phone, showing Sebastian’s words”
The judge nodded for Victor to continue after accepting the document. Victor then showed the CCTV footage of Emily descending the stairs,
“Unfortunately, the exterior cameras at the venue were dysfunctional, but this footage, establishes that Emily went outside to meet someone. Combined with the threatening messages from the defendant, it’s clear who she went to meet”
Sebastian’s lawyer, Clara Woods, rose to object,
“Your Honor, the prosecution is making speculative statements. There is no direct evidence linking my client to what happened after Emily left the building”
“Overruled” the judge said, but his gaze lingered on Victor as if to caution him.
Victor turned back to Bailey,
“Ms. Carter, would you say Emily trusted Sebastian?”
“No” Bailey replied emphatically,
“She wanted to get away from him, but he always found a way to pull her back in”
“Thank you, Ms. Carter. No further questions”
Clara Woods approached Bailey, her expression calm but probing,
“Ms. Carter, you’ve described a toxic relationship between Emily and my client. Would you say they argued often?”
“Yes” Bailey admitted,
“And yet, Emily agreed to meet him on her wedding day. Doesn’t that indicate she trusted him, at least to some degree?”
Bailey hesitated,

“she met him because she felt she had no choice!
“Interesting” Clara said, her tone skeptical,
“But there’s no proof that my client physically harmed Emily that day, is there?”
“No‘ Bailey admitted reluctantly,
“Thank you. No further questions”
Bailey walked off the stand and glanced at Sebastian for a moment before going back to her seat. Clara got up to speak to the court,
“Your Honor, the prosecution has presented a compelling narrative, but that’s all it is–a narrative. There is no concrete evidence that my client attacked Emily Roberts”
“The chat logs show heated words, yes, but they do not prove intent to harm. And as for the CCTV footage, it simply shows Ms. Roberts leaving the building…. It does not show my client following her or attacking her”
Victor quickly countered,
“Your Honor, the absence of footage outside the building does not absolve the defendant. The threatening messages and his presence at the scene paint a clear picture of his guilt”
The two lawyers engaged in a heated back and forth, raising their voices as they debated how/ strong the evidence was,
“Speculation!” Clara argued,
“Circumstantial evidence is still evidence!” Victor shot back,
The judge banged his gavel,
“Order! Both of you, step back”
The courtroom fell silent and the judge leaned forward, his gaze sweeping the room,
“With the evidence provided before me, it’s clear there are strong suspicions against Mr. Young. However, suspicion alone does not equate to guilt beyond a reasonable doubt”
“Unless the prosecution can provide further proof, I will have no choice but to….” The judge was still in the middle of speaking when the courtroom doors abruptly sprang open.
Two women entered and everyone turned to watch them since they immediately attracted. attention. They were dressed immaculately, and their faces showed a mixture of stubbornness and conviction. The room echoed with gasps as reporters rushed to capture the action, one of the women spoke up, her voice clearly audible,
“Your Honor, Mr. Young is innocent. Drop the charges.”
