Chapter 13
Vivian secretly checked in on Sebastian, even asking the doctor about his condition. She was disappointed to hear it was just some surface–level injuries and nothing life–threatening.
She sent a message to Roxanne. “I went to check He’s not dead.”
Roxanne glanced at the message. She put her phone away without replying. She finished her last sip of drink, paid, and walked out of the bar, her steps unsteady.
Two young men had been keeping an eye on her from the moment she had walked in. After all, she was pretty, drinking alone, and looked vulnerable. Their thoughts quickly took an inappropriate turn, and as soon as she left the bar, they followed her.
She stood at the side of the road as she pulled out her phone to check the time it was just past 9:00 pm. The streetlight cast halos of light around her, stretching her shadow long on the ground.
It was still early, but the alley behind the bar was eerily quiet. Cabs rarely came this and
way, she realized she couldn’t make her way home alone. So, she dialed Vivian’s number.
The phone rang, and soon it was picked up. “Vivian, I’ve had too much to drink. Can you come get me-” She started, but before she could finish, someone grabbed her from behind and covered her mouth.
“Rox? Rox!” Vivian immediately sensed something and called out in worry.
Roxanne’s eyes widened in panic. At that moment, she suddenly remembered Jenson’s advice –he had asked her to always stay calm no matter the situation.
That was right. She couldn’t panic now. Losing control was the worst thing she could do- whether in court or danger.
She steadied her breath, thinking quickly, and stomped hard on the man’s foot behind her. He yelped in pain, loosening his grip just enough for her to break free with a sharp elbow to his ribs. Without wasting another second, she ran toward the street.
The main road was busy, and once she reached the crowd, she would be safe.
“Damn it, you bitch!” the man cursed, but his pain slowed him down, and his companion gave up the chase after a brief attempt.
People were everywhere on the main street, and he didn’t dare grab her in front of so many
witnesses.
Roxanne kept running, dodging people on the street, stumbling a few times as she nearly crashed into others. She glanced back and, seeing no one was following, allowed herself a brief moment of relief. But she didn’t relax her guard—she just wanted to get as far from that spot as possible.
Chapter 13
In her distracted state, she collided with someone ahead of her. “Sorry, I didn’t see you-” She apologized, but when she looked up, she was shocked to see Jenson standing there.
She froze, stunned. “Mr. Lambert?”
“Are you alright?” he asked, concern in his voice
She nodded, still shaken. “I’m fine.”
She glanced back once more, ensuring no one was following before letting herself relax a little.
“Let’s go.” Jenson motioned toward his car and then pulled out his phone to call Vivian.
“I found her.”
When Roxanne had called, Vivian had been with Lawrence, and coincidentally, Jenson had been there as well. Once they had heard that Roxanne might be in trouble, they had quickly joined forces to find her.
Since Roxanne’s call hadn’t ended, they had been able to track her location and reach her quickly.
Once in the car, Vivian hugged Roxanne tightly. “What happened? You went silent all of a sudden. I was so worried!”
Roxanne reassured her, “I’m fine.”
Being a lawyer meant having a strong inner resolve. Staying calm was the most basic quality of a lawyer.
She had panicked earlier. Even now, she still felt a little uneasy, but for the most part, she had regained her composure.
