Chapter 14
Roxanne was deeply touched by how quickly Vivian had arrived. She felt a sense of relief; she had survived a close call. “Vivian, thank you.”
Vivian smiled. “No need to thank me.” She glanced ahead and added, “You owe thanks to more than just me, right?”
Roxanne felt embarrassed for letting herself get into such a messy situation over a man who didn’t deserve it. Her eyes wandered; she couldn’t bring herself to look forward. “Mr. Lambert, thank you.”
“Most welcome,” came his calm, indifferent response. It was his usual tone.
They were in the car for a while before they arrived at the hotel. Vivian and Roxanne got out.
Vivian waved her hand. “Thanks again.”
Jenson nodded slightly, his gaze landing on Roxanne. Although she had calmed down, her face still looked pale.
His expression deepened a little, but he didn’t say much. “I’ll take my leave now.”
As Jenson drove off, Vivian looped her arm through Roxanne’s. “Do you know who he is? I didn’t expect my grandfather to have such a good relationship with him.”
“Of course,” Roxanne replied. “He’s a partner at Goldenvale Law Partners, one of the top eight firms in Hyverland—
“No, no, no,” Vivian interrupted, leaning closer to Roxanne with a mysterious tone. “That’s just the least impressive thing about him. He’s also-”
“Vivian,” Roxanne cut her off, not wanting to get into gossip about Jenson’s background. She wasn’t interested in his personal story at all. What mattered was her work.
She needed to make progress as soon as possible, both for her own sake and to repay Lawrence’s trust in her. He had mentored her and introduced someone like Jenson during her lowest point, guiding her toward a better path.
If she still remained as clueless as she had been seven years ago, then she might as well consider her career–and her life–over.
Noticing the shift in Roxanne’s mood, Vivian wisely dropped the subject.
Once they entered the room, she said, “This place isn’t safe. I found somewhere for you to stay
that’s close to Goldenvale Law Partners. It’ll be more convenient for you to go to work. How about you take half a day off tomorrow to check it out?”
Roxanne nodded. “Sounds good.”
Chapter 14
And so Roxanne found and signed a year–long lease for a place near the law firm. Though the neighborhood was expensive, she was willing to endure the financial strain for the sake of convenience.
As she and Vivian left the real estate office, her phone rang. It was Ambrose asking her to join him for lunch.
She had left his birthday party without even eating the cake, so she agreed to meet him. She invited Vivian along, but since Vivian had a date with her boyfriend, she went alone.
When Roxanne saw Ambrose, she froze for a moment. His right eye was bruised, and there were more bruises on his mouth and cheek.
Recalling Vivian mention Sebastian being in the Hospital, Roxanne tentatively asked, “Did you and Sebastian get into a fight after I left?”
Ambrose didn’t deny it.
Roxanne sighed. “You know his temper. Why bother arguing with him-”
“Rox.” Ambrose interrupted her, gazing deeply at her. “The fight wasn’t because of his temper. It was because of you.”
She misunderstood, thinking he had been standing up for her.
She picked up her glass of water, her voice calm. “Don’t let this happen again, okay? Don’t let him drag you into conflict. I don’t care anymore. We’re divorced, and there’s nothing between
us now.”
“I like you,” Ambrose said suddenly. “I’ve liked you since the first time I saw you.”
