Chapter 17
“Shut up,” Sebastian snapped, not wanting to hear Roxanne’s name right now. His expression darkened. He had a sinking feeling that she was serious about leaving him.
Noticing his concern, Liam tried to comfort him “Maybe she’s just pretending to get close to Ambrose to make you jealous.”
“Is that so?” Sebastian didn’t think it was that simple.
Henry quickly added, “Ambrose said he’s liked Roxanne even longer than you have. You two were together for three years before marriage, then four years married, making seven years total.
“Do you believe Ambrose could secretly like her for eight years? I don’t buy it. Who can stay in love with someone for that long without changing?”
He was trying to comfort Sebastian, but at the same time, he really did find it hard to believe anyone could secretly love someone for eight years without losing interest. It almost seemed too romantic.
Roxanne was beautiful, with an excellent figure and face, but surely that wasn’t enough to keep someone’s affection for that long.
Sebastian was too disoriented to think clearly. “Just leave me alone for now,” he said.
Liam asked, “Are you
sure?”
“I’m fine. If I need anything, I’ll call for a nurse,” Sebastian replied.
“Alright. Call us if you need anything.”
After Liam and Henry left, the room fell into silence.
Sebastian pulled out his phone, hesitated, and then dialed Roxanne’s number. He was met with the message that the line was busy. He waited and dialed again, but it was the same message. Something didn’t feel right.
This could mean two things–either she was on another call, or he had been blocked.
After trying a third time, he was sure. He had been blocked.
His face darkened. Was this her way of confronting him?
Meanwhile, Roxanne was meeting with Nolan and diving deeper into the case. It turned out it wasn’t as simple as she had initially thought.
Juno Aldridge, the woman involved in the fake marriage, wasn’t just avoiding any signs of
living with Nolan; she was a repeat offender. She had been married several times before and was a few years older than Nolan.
There were at least ten people involved in this fake marriage scheme connected to the demolition project. And now, the police were planning to make an example of Nolan.
Clearly feeling the pressure, Nolan asked, “What should I do? Does the situation look bad for
me?”
Roxanne remained calm. “Though the case is more complicated than I thought, the police will need solid, irrefutable evidence to convict you. I think it will be difficult for them. If there’s even a small mistake, we have a chance to challenge it.”
Nolan was still nervous. Although she spoke with calm professionalism, he couldn’t shake the feeling that she was too young to really help him
She understood his doubt but didn’t comment on it. Trust was something that had to be earned through action. Until the case was won, he could hold on to his skepticism.
Her phone suddenly rang, and she saw her mother’s name on the display. Her expression stiffened.
“Why aren’t you picking up the phone?” Nolan asked.
Roxanne stood and said, “Please excuse me for a moment.
She held the phone away from her ear as she answered the call, worried her mother might make her deaf.
“Do you know that Sebastian is hurt? Why aren’t you taking care of him? Why are you running around?” Macy Hudson’s tone was sharp.
Roxanne sighed. “I’ve been busy these days. I’ll explain everything when I get back in a few days-”
“A few days? Are you out of your mind? Get back here right now!” Macy’s voice grew even more piercing.
