Chapter 23
Chapter 23
Roxanne picked up her fork and looked up at Macy. “Mom, you should eat too.”
Was Macy really coming around?
Roxanne was slightly surprised, but she maintained a calm attitude. She quietly let out a sigh
of relief.
Looking at Macy, she said, “Don’t worry, Mom. ‘ll work hard to support you and Dad. I can’t promise you a life of luxury, but I can definitely make sure you have everything you need—a comfortable life without worries
“Eat first, Rox.” Macy smiled.
“Mm.” Roxanne nodded and took a bite of the spaghetti.
After finishing their meal, the two of them walked out, one ahead of the other. Suddenly, Macy grabbed Roxanne’s hand, and tears started pouring down her face uncontrollably,
Roxanne was stunned. They had just been fine during lunch.
“Mom, what’s wrong?”
“Rox, please, just do this for me. Go find Sebastian and apologize to him.”
Macy had gone to find Sebastian earlier, hoping to apologize on behalf of Roxanne and ask for his forgiveness. Sebastian, who had once been so kind to her, had completely ignored her. She had been thrown out by the security at the law firm.
There had been stairs at the entrance, and she had accidentally fallen down, landing her in a messy situation.
In the past, when she had visited Sebastian, everyone had treated her with respect, offering tea and pouring water for her. Now, it felt like she had fallen from heaven to hell.
She couldn’t handle the difference.
Roxanne’s face hardened. “Mom…”
“Do you need me to kneel for you to agree?” Macy said, about to kneel right then and there.
Roxanne grabbed Macy, her eyes stinging with frustration and sorrow. She understood that Macy had been bullied by her grandmother for not having a son and that her life hadn’t been
easy.
But asking her to go to Sebastian… That felt worse than death.
She didn’t try to explain or persuade Macy. She knew her mother too well.
Macy forced her to go to the building where Sebastian worked and called him. But he didn’t
answer. She grew anxious. “Look, he never treated me like this before.”
Roxanne coldly watched her panic. When one call didn’t go through, she tried again. She repeatedly called for more than ten times, but Sebastian never picked up.
Macy’s hands trembled, and she dropped her phone, sending it crashing against the ground.
At that moment, Sebastian and Rachel came out of the building. At that moment, Macy was bending down to pick up her phone.
Sebastian had his hands in his pockets, and Rachel, clearly displeased, muttered, “When you were hospitalized, Roxanne didn’t show up even once. What’s she playing at? You even told me she went to cook for you. Did she go cook for you, or is she out running around somewhere?”
Before she could finish, she spotted Roxanne standing at the entrance, and her tone immediately became mocking.
“Oh, you’re not dead after all. I thought you’d disappeared. You couldn’t even care for your own husband while he was in the hospital. What’s next? Do you want to be kicked to the curb?”
