Chapter 50 – In Pursuit of Truth
Madeline’s eyes were filled with a resolute fire as she suddenly rose from her chair. Swinging her coat over her arm, she grabbed her keys from the counter, there was no longer any point. in sitting around waiting for answers. She had questions, and she was determined to find out. It was an anxious drive to the hospital, her hands clutched the driving wheel while her mind whirred in disarray, Sebastian, Emily, the trail, the attack.
How could everything have gotten so out of hand so fast?
She had to take a deep breath to calm herself as she pulled into the hospital parking lot. She was motivated by something more profound than simple curiosity. Maddie had to know what had happened.
Inside the hospital, Emily’s room was unattended save for the medical staff because Albert had gone out earlier to pick up some things from Emily’s house. Madeline walked confidently toward the desk of the receptionist,
“I’m here to see Emily Roberts” she said confidently,
The receptionist hesitated, glancing at her skeptically,
“And you are?”
“I’m one of her staff members” Maddie lied smoothly, adding a polite smile for good measure
The receptionist led her to Emily’s room as she believed it. Maddie did not spend any time moving down the hallway till she arrived at the room. On the bed inside, Emily lay with her eyes half open and her pale face framed by bandages, her lips formed a thin, parched smile at the sight of Maddie.
“Smart pants? What are you doing here?” Emily croaked, her voice hoarse from lack of use. Maddie chuckled softly, moving closer to the bed,
“I came to get answers”
She hesitated for a moment before sitting in the chair beside Emily’s bed
“Sebastian… He’s been arrested. They think he’s the one who attacked you”
Emily sat up with difficulty, wincing at the strain as her eyes widened a little,
“It wasn’t him” she said firmly, her voice gaining strength despite the dryness,
Maddie’s brow furrowed,
“What? Are you sure? Then who….”
“Where is he?”

“In jail” Maddie replied,
“He’s on trial this morning. It might have already started”
Emily tried to sit up straighter, and Maddie quickly moved to support her,
“Listen to me, Maddie” Emily said, her tone urgent,
“Sebastian didn’t do it. He’s innocent. I need to go to the court and clear, his name”
Maddie stared at her in disbelief,
“You’re in no condition to…

“I have to” Emily interrupted, she tried to stand up by swinging her legs off the bed. She staggered, weak from her wounds, and Maddie rushed to her side,
“Take it easy!” Maddie scolded, helping her regain balance,
Emily’s determination didn’t waver,
“We have to go. Now Maddie”
The door suddenly opened, and Albert entered with a little bag of things he had taken from Emily’s house. When he first spotted Maddie, his face changed to one of shock,
“Who are you?” he demanded, his protective instincts kicking in,
“This is Maddie” Emily interjected before Maddie could respond,
“I’ll explain everything later, but we need to leave. Sebastian is innocent”
Albert looked between the two women, his confusion deepening,
“Emily, you’re not even supposed to be out of bed. You’re in no condition to…
“Albert, please” Emily said firmly,
“There’s no time for this. If we don’t go now, an innocent man will pay for something he didn’t do and the real attacker will roam free among us”
Albert sighed, defeated by her unwavering will,
“Fine. But you’re taking the wheelchair”
Emily remained silent. She had Albert assist her into the wheelchair, and as Maddie picked up her luggage, he hastily wrapped a coat over her shoulders. The three of them stepped out into the clear morning air as the hospital doors opened. Maddie strolled next to them while Albert pushed Emily’s wheelchair along.
The reporters who had been positioned outside the hospital jumped right in, their microphones pressed forward and cameras flashing as they barraged the three with inquiries,
Chawest #Pursuit of truth.
“Emily, can you confirm the rumors about Sebastian Young?”
“Is it true he attacked you twice?”
“Why is this woman with you?”
“What do you have to say to the public, Emily?”
Emily paid little attention to them all, concentrating only on getting to the courtroom. Maddie kept her head down and protected her as best she could while Albert made his way through the crowd of reporters.
The scene inside the courtroom was heated when they eventually arrived. With Sebastian seated at the defendant’s table and his attorney at his side, the trial had already begun, the prosecution, on the other hand, was halfway through its case.
The judge held his gavel firmly in his palm as he presided over the courtroom with a sense of authority,
“With the evidence provided before me, it’s clear there are strong suspicions against Mr. Young. However, suspicion alone does not equate to guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Unless the prosecution can provide further proof, I will have no choice but to…. “Your Honor, Mr. Young is innocent. Drop the charges” Emily said.
