Chapter 23: Building Bridges
**Thelma Zane’s Perspective**
Surrounded by classmates who had already awakened their werewolves, I couldn’t help but feel a distinct sense of longing. Even Aldrich, with his ever–present air of confidence, had his werewolf, though I had never seen it. My parents perhaps out of concern for my feelings, always refrained from letting their werewolves manifest in my presence. They feared it might highlight the gap between me I everyone else. As a result, while I had grown up around those who had their wolves, I’d never truly seen one–not even once. This realization
gave me
an idea. Maybe today, I could act cute and persuasive to convince my parents to show me their
werewolves.
Miss Horace’s voice brought me back to the present as she continued the lesson. “The first transformation is always the most challenging and painful. It is also the easiest to fail. The key. lies in allowing the process to unfold naturally. Do not force it. Once you complete your first transformation, the difficulties will fade away, and you will be able to shift at will.”
Her explanations were thorough, supplemented by research and real–life cases that emphasized the importance of this milestone for every werewolf. The room was silent, her words holding everyone’s undivided attention. Despite her strict demeanor, Miss Horace was a captivating teacher. None of us dared to drift off during her lessons.
Time slipped away, and soon the class ended. A break was announced before the next session. During the pause, I received my class schedule, which was beautifully written in fine black ink on paper embossed with the school’s emblem. The schedule was straightforward, with classes starting at noon every week. One detail stood out–three sessions dedicated to physical training.
Miss Horace had earlier mentioned that maintaining good physical fitness was crucial for a successful werewolf transformation. It was a glaring reminder that I had never been physically prepared for this process, unlike others who had trained from a young age. The thought struck me that I should ask my father to let Aldrich train me in the mornings. His guidance could prove invaluable in preparing me for what lay ahead.
As I pondered this, two girls approached me with warm smiles.
“Hi, nice to meet you,” said one of them. She had dark hair and eyes, her light brown skin glowing with vitality. Her curly hair cascaded down her shoulders, adding to her spirited
demeanor.
“Hello,” I replied with a friendly smile.
“I’m Mara, and this is Avril,” she said, gesturing to the blonde girl beside her.
Avril was strikingly different from Mara. Her round face and doll–like blue eyes gave her an almost ethereal charm. She offered me a shy smile as she was introduced.

“It’s wonderful to meet you both. I’m Thelma Zane,” I said, shaking hands with each of them. I couldn’t contain my delight at making friends on my very first day.
“Have you chosen a club yet?” Mara asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
“Club?” I echoed, puzzled.
“Didn’t your parents tell you about it? The school offers various clubs, and you can join one based on your interests. Clubs are a fantastic way to learn specialized skills and connect with people who share similar passions. What’s more, they often invite experts to mentor the
members.”
I bit my lip, realizing my parents might have overlooked this detail in their busy schedules. I’ll have to ask them about it when I get home. What clubs have you joined?”
Mara’s expression lit up. “I’m in the opera club. I’ve always loved performing.” Her
enthusiasm was infectious, and her choice of club didn’t surprise me–she had the aura of someone born to be on stage.
Avril’s answer, however, caught me off guard. “I joined the boxing club,” she said softly, her delicate appearance contrasting sharply with her choice.
I smiled politely, though neither of these clubs particularly appealed to me. Deep down, I hoped the school had a club focused on leadership or governance–something that could prepare me for the challenges of royal responsibilities. It would certainly help me feel less.
overwhelmed.
We continued chatting, our conversation flowing effortlessly until Mara’s curiosity got the
better of her.
“By the way,” she began, leaning in slightly, “are you new here? I’ve never seen you before. I have a pretty good memory for faces, and I’m sure I would’ve remembered yours.”
“Yes,” I admitted, nodding. “I arrived only a few weeks ago.” I left out the more fantastical details about my arrival via the river.
Mara’s head tilted thoughtfully. “That explains it I knew you weren’t from around here.”
She hesitated for a moment, clearly debating whether to ask her next question. Avril, sensing her friend’s boldness, tugged at her arm as if to dissuade her.
“It’s okay.” I assured them. “Ask whatever you’d like. I’ll do my best to answer.”
Mara hesitated no longer. “What’s your relationship with Her Majesty?”
I had rehearsed my response for moments like this. With a steady voice, I explained, “We’re related by blood. I’ve been living abroad for most of my life, and I’ve only recently returned to prepare for a new chapter here.”
Their eyes widened in unison, their expressions a mix of awe and disbelief.

“Wow, that’s incredible!” Mara exclaimed.
“Which country did you
live in before?” Avril asked, her voice filled with genuine curiosity.
“I didn’t stay in one particular country for long,” I replied honestly. “But I think this place is the most beautiful of all.”
Mara turned to Avril with an excited grin. “Can you believe we’re talking to someone related to the Queen?”
Avril nodded, her shyness giving way to wonder. “I thought someone like you would be training exclusively in the palace,” she remarked softly.
I chuckled and clarified, “Her Majesty felt it would be beneficial for me to attend school here. She believes it’s important for me to integrate with others and make new friends.”
Their admiration was evident, but more than that, I saw the beginnings of a genuine connection. Though this day had started with uncertainty, it was now shaping into something meaningful. These first friendships might just be the foundation of a new chapter in my life.
