Chapter 38: Special Treatment for the Girlfriend
**Thelma Zane’s POV**
I slumped back in my chair, feeling somewhat disheartened. A sudden thought crossed my mind, and I looked at my mother with curiosity. “When do you think I can reveal my
identity?”
She paused, contemplating the question carefully. “Your father and I believe that once you’ve completed your training and can fully protect yourself, it will be time. That will probably take about a year.”
A year. The number echoed in my mind.
I had already endured a month of training, so that meant there were still eleven months to go. Eleven months until the moment I could share my true self with Aldrich and witness his reaction to the truth. I couldn’t help but smile at the thought, but my imagination failed to conjure up how he might respond. The anticipation was almost unbearable–I couldn’t wait for that day to arrive.
Trying to distract myself from my racing thoughts, I turned to my mother with a new
question. “Mom, when will I be able to see your wolf? And do you think mine will be as strong and magnificent as yours?”
She was reviewing a schedule handed to her by an attendant, her expression tense with focus. The weight of her responsibilities was clear. Both my parents had so much on their plates that I barely got to see them every day. I instantly regretted my question. It felt selfish to ask for more of her time when she was already stretched so thin.
“If it’s too much, it’s okay,” I said hurriedly, trying to ease the burden I might have placed on her. “We can always do it later–maybe someday when things aren’t so hectic.”
Her lips curved into a warm smile, the kind only a mother could give. “It’s okay, sweetheart. You can always tell me what’s on your mind. How about next weekend? Your father and I can cancel a few of those tedious social events.” She winked, her playful gesture lightening the
moment.
I nodded eagerly, but before I could respond, she glanced at the time and gave me a knowing look. “Speaking of which, haven’t you been excited about training? You’d better hurry along!”
Her words sparked a flurry of excitement in me. I couldn’t wait to see Aldrich again. The thought of him made my heart race. Hastily, I bid her goodbye and rushed to the training ground, where someone was already waiting for me.
“Good morning, my dear girlfriend,” Aldrich greeted me with a wide smile, though the dark circles under his eyes betrayed his lack of sleep. “Did you sleep well last night?”
amidst the conversations about schedules and responsibilities, we managed to settle on a plan to see their wolves. My parents suggested doing this on a weekday since they reserved
weekends for spending time together.
It was during this discussion that I began to understand my parents in a new light. Their relationship was a quiet but profound bond. They found joy simply in being together, even if they were doing nothing at all. It was a feeling 1 could relate to now. When I was with Aldrich, even mundane moments felt special. Without him, no matter how interesting my day was, something always felt missing.
My thoughts drifted to him again. Would he feel disappointed that we didn’t get to spend more time together after training? I sighed at the thought of relying on our phones to communicate for the rest of the day. It was frustrating, to say the least.
“Thelma? Thelma?” My mother’s voice snapped me out of my daydream.
She was smiling knowingly, and I felt my cheeks heat up under her teasing gaze.
“Would you like to take a walk in the forest with us one day?” she asked casually. “The scenery by the lake is stunning right now.”
My father chimed in thoughtfully. “What about tomorrow?”
Tomorrow. The suggestion made my heart flutter. Though I had training scheduled, I could already see this as an opportunity to treat it as a gift for Aldrich–perhaps even an unspoken apology for cutting our time short today.
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated in my pocket. It was Aldrich calling, but I hesitated. With my parents right here, I couldn’t answer. Silently, I declined the call, pretending as though nothing had happened, though my heart longed to hear his voice.
