Chapter 84: Embracing the Heat of Summer

**Thelma Zane’s Perspective**

The moment my father gave his approval, I couldn’t contain my excitement. I let out an elated cheer, and even Dorothy, typically composed and measured, squeezed my hand in shared

enthusiasm

This mission was undoubtedly perilous, but I saw it as a rare opportunity for Dorothy. It was a chance for her to confront her witch heritage, to reconcile with that part of herself she often viewed with disdain. Dorothy had always struggled with selfacceptance, her kind and intelligent nature overshadowed by an internalized fear that her powers were inherently dark. I hoped this journey would help her understand that her abilities were a gift, not a curse legacy, not a stain

And so, our rigorous days of preparation began

–

It wasn’t a surprise to anyone that Dorothy couldn’t immediately undo the curse afflicting the southern Duke. She had immense talent, but she was still inexperienced, a novice stepping into a complex and ancient art. My father, ever thoughtful, arranged for three werewolf masters skilled in sorcery to guide both Dorothy and me

Yes, I had decided to learn as well

Know yourself and your enemy, and you will never lose,my father had told me. He believed, that even if I couldn’t master the intricacies of witchcraft, understanding it would be an invaluable tool to protect myself and those around me

Our already busy lives became even more intense with the addition of these lessons. It felt as though there was no time left for anything outside our mission. Trips to the club or simple moments of leisure became relics of the past

Mara and Avril, our closest friends, weren’t thrilled about this change. They frequently teased us, accusing us of harboring little secrets.”

We’re not even close friends anymore!Mara declared dramatically one afternoon

Avril nodded in solemn agreement. You’ve abandoned us for who knows what. We might ast well cut all ties!”

Their declarations, however, didn’t last long. Within minutes, they were back at our table, sharing lunch and grumbling about the injustice of it all

Then there was Aldrich, my everdedicated partner. His presence in my life had only grown since we made our relationship public with the approval of our families. However, his devotion often bordered on overbearing. He had taken to following me everywhere, an

affectionate but relentless shadow

Aldrich,I said one day, disentangling myself from his warm embrace, we need to set boundaries. You’re drawing too much attention. Do you realize how often Father looks at you. like he’s about to exile you to human society?”

Unfazed, Aldrich wrapped his arms around me again, his broad frame trapping me against the banister of a stairwell

For you, Thelma,he said with a grin, I’d gladly live in the sorcerersswamp”

1 pushed against his chest, laughing despite myself. Let’s not test that theory, alright? Besides, we really do need to be careful. Carolyn well, the fake Carolynhas been causing me enough trouble at school as it is. If she starts paying too much attention to us, it could complicate things further.”

Aldrich sighed, resting his chin on my shoulder. Alright, I understand.”

Good. Remember, we’re not just two people in love. You’re the general, and I’m a princess We both have responsibilities to our pack.”

I reached up to ruffle his hair, a small gesture of affection that earned me a rare moment of playful laughter from him

You know,he said, his voice tinged with humor, every time you talk about responsibilities, I get the sudden urge to transform into my wolf form and whisk you away to some secluded place where no one can find us.”

I shook my head, smiling. If only life were that simple. You’d make a great romantic lead in a novel, but I don’t think our fathers would be quite as charmed by the idea of us eloping

Our conversation, like so many others, was a small reprieve from the intensity of our daily routines. The hours flew by in a blur of study and practice

One day, amidst the grind, something extraordinary happened. I experienced my first human

-wolf shift.”

The transformation was sudden and unplanned, leaving me startled and unsure of what had just occurred. Maxine, my wolf, emerged for the first time, stunning Dorothy and the

instructors

Dorothy, ever the quick thinker, released her wolf, Elaine, to communicate with Maxine. It was a moment of connection that left everyone in awe

Tracy, one of the werewolf masters, suggested that my awakening was triggered by the stress of our studies. While I was embarrassed by the unexpected nature of the event, I couldn’t deny the joy it brought. It felt like a milestone, a sign that I was growing into my role

Dorothy, as always, was supportive. Aldrich, on the other hand, was less than thrilled that he hadn’t been the first to meet Maxine. He sulked about it for days, forcing me to shower him with affection to lift his spirits

Chapter 34 Embracing the Peat of Summer

Before we knew it, summer arrived. May came with its warmth and promise, bringing us closer to the end of the school year. Graduation loomed just a month away, a milestone that marked not only the conclusion of academic life but the beginning of a new chapter

Dorothy’s progress was nothing short of astonishing. In just half a year, she had absorbed everything the masters had to offer. They marveled at her aptitude, declaring her ready to step into the role of a true witch. Their confidence in her abilities was so strong that they felt their work was complete

–

This was a pleasant surprise for my father. Carolynor rather, the imposter posing as her was about to transition into university life. This shift would give her far more freedom, making her movements harder to track. My father believed that if Dorothy could lift the southern Duke’s curse in time, we might have a fighting chance to uncover Carolyn’s plans before she could act

Werewolves and sorcerers have been adversaries for centuries,my father said. We understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else.”

Finally, the day arrived. After months of anticipation, the southern Duke returned to the

palace. This time, it wasn’t just my parents and me waiting to greet him. Dorothy stood beside

us

brimming with confidence and ready to face the challenge ahead

Our preparations were complete. Now, the true test would begin
