Chapter 27
Olivia stood up unsteadily, her face wet with tears. She locked eyes with Eric as the crowd gasped in shock.
Eric pressed his lips together, knowing she was forcing him to make a choice. He took a deep breath and glanced at Ashley, whose face remained expressionless. His voice was ice cold as he said, “We’ll get married after you recover from your surgery.”
It was clear he still wanted Olivia to have the surgery.
Olivia felt a mix of fury and happiness. She was angry that Eric still didn’t believe her and wanted Ashley to perform the surgery. But at the same time, she felt happy that he promised to marry her in front of everyone.
Emma felt anxious when she saw Olivia still standing there. “Olivia, just come down. Eric promised to marry you.” She knew they had to stop pushing. If they went too far and something unexpected happened, Olivia’s plan might be ruined.
“Eric!” Olivia held out her hand and looked at Eric with a pitiful look in her eyes, hinting that she wanted him to help her down. But Eric didn’t budge, standing where he was as he stared at her.
Suddenly, a police officer saw his chance and kicked Olivia from behind her, making her fall into the crowd with a thud.
Ashley covered her mouth to hide her laugh. Then she made herself look serious. She had known all along that Olivia was only bluffing. If Olivia had truly wanted to jump off the rooftop, she would have done it long before Eric arrived.
With Olivia safe on the ground, the crowd started to leave.
Ashley was disgusted seeing Olivia cling to Eric, sobbing Olivia’s drama had spoiled her holiday. Ashley turned and left, unaware of Eric’s gaze at her.
With the crisis over, the hospital didn’t have to take the blame. They held an emergency meeting, stressing that doctors should pay attention to patients‘ mental and emotional health too, which was exactly the aftermath of Olivia’s “attempted suicide.”
“Ms. Garcia’s surgery is next week. Dr. Garcia, get ready. Don’t make any mistakes. Since it’s a special surgery, we’ll live–stream it for others to watch,” the director, Noah Sullivan, said before ending the meeting. It sounded like he was praising her skills, but it was actually a warning. He didn’t want anything unpleasant to happen that could damage the hospital’s image, so he arranged for the live stream.
Ashley didn’t worry about it. She treated all patients the same and wouldn’t let personal issues change that After the meeting, she went back to her office and saw her assistant winking at her.
