“Gigi?” Donald exclaimed reproachfully, his eyes widening in shock. “Why did you do that? You wouldn’t do such a thing! Did you do it because that bitch Jeanette bullied you first? Don’t worry. The police officers are right here. I’ll seek justice on your behalf!”
Even now, after the evidence had been laid out, Donald’s immediate reaction was to pin the blame on me.
While I used to be hurt by his blind faith in Gigi, I now felt disgusted. Just seeing his face was enough to make me feel like puking. In fact, even the thought of that nauseated me. I rushed to the bathroom and vomited my guts out.
“Jeanette? What’s wrong?”
“Get the hell away from me!” I shouted, shoving his hand away.
Everyone watched as Donald abandoned Gigi on the side and hung around me for the first time ever.
“Jeanette? Should I take you to the hospital?”
“Don’t bother. I wouldn’t dare to trouble you!” I retorted before drinking some water, doing my best to quell the discomfort I felt.
He was the one who first pursued me. He was the one who said he wanted to take care of me for the rest of my life. Thanks to his vague, non–committal promises, I waited for him year after year, giving him all the love I had to give.
“Can you not be so harsh? Can’t we just have a proper conversation?” Donald asked. It was the first time I had ever been this fierce toward him. He was a bit tongue–tied.
“Oh, forget it. I shouldn’t hold it against you… How are your injuries? You were too impulsive that day, you know. I only chose to give you some space because I thought we both needed some time to cool off. Look at you now. You can get around just fine, so I’m sure nothing bad happened…
“Out with it, Donald. Just get straight to the point,” I said.
Having been with him for five years, I could read him like a book. His eyes only ever surveyed me with either scorn or the desire to get something from me.
“Gigi definitely didn’t do it on purpose. Although there’s the matter of the footage, I’m sure you won’t press charges against her, right?”
I couldn’t resist bursting out in laughter as if I had just been told the most ridiculous joke ever.
“Nothing bad happened, you say?” I questioned.
“Does this hurt?” I asked as I used my left hand to grab a fistful of Donald’s hair. Still keeping my cool, I calmly remarked, “I bet it’s not as painful as what I had to go through.”
I continued, “Donald, thanks to the two of you, my right hand is now crippled for good. If I hadn’t been treated in time, the doctors would’ve had to amputate it!
“Where were you when I was suffering in pain? You were busy thinking of a surprise for Gigi, doing your best to win her favor! How can you even face me with a clear conscience?
“It’s been five whole years. Even if I were nothing but a pet to you, shouldn’t you have at least developed an ounce. of affection for me by now? Do you even have a heart?”
Donald’s eyes flashed with surprise. After staring in a daze for a moment, he gasped. He finally realized why I was reacting in such an extreme manner.

“Don’t listen to her, Donnie! You know very well I didn’t mean to do it!” Gigi screamed in vehement protest. You’re just jealous he likes me and not you, Jeanette! You should’ve just tried to compete with me fairly! What’s the use of getting all these people to play along with you, huh?”
Gordon couldn’t take it anymore. Slamming his hand on the table, he roared, “You know very well whether or not you did it on purpose! I can’t believe you haven’t changed at all after all these years, Gigi!
“Haven’t you been brought to the police time and time again for intentionally harming others? Have you forgotten about the half–year prison sentence you served during your college days? Well, I guess a leopard can’t change its spots.
“You attacked someone with a blade for getting better results than you, and you hired a bunch of lowlifes to rob someone richer than you. Just what kind of a person are you?”
Donald shuddered. His eyes flickered, and after a moment, he took several steps backward. He even started eyeing Gigi with a slightly different expression.
