Chapter 75
Hunter was chopping onions and I was grating ginger as his phone rang. I saw his shoulders tens as he saw who was calling
“Denny, how are things going?” Hunter answered. I recognised the name of his friends in the police force. After wiping my hands clean, I walked over to him and gave him a hug from behind. The conversation wasn’t important to me. I just wanted to offer him some comfort, like he always did for me. His free hand landed on top of mine and he squeezed them. “I was expecting as much. Thank you for letting me know,” Hunter said and then hung up. “They have arrested Simon,” he said.
“I’m sorry. Is there something you need?” I asked. He turned around and hugged me back. His beard scratched my neck as he leaned against my shoulder.
“I just need a moment like this,” he told me, and I could hear how tired he sounded. I tightened my arms around him and leaned my head against his.
“Take as long as you need,” I said. After a moment, I could feel him relaxing. Then his phone rang again. He answered without looking at it, still holding me with one arm, leaning his head against me.
“Yes?” he said. “Mandy, calm down,” he added after a while. Simon’s mother was screaming loud enough for me to hear her. I tensed up hearing her voice. I had heard her screaming at me enough times that I needed to remind myself that she had no idea I was here.
I put him in jail?” Mandy screamed.
“Why is my son telling me his father 1
“Mady, this mess is not mine. Simon did this to himself, and I tried to help him out of it more than once. He refused my help and now he needs to take ownership
of it. Hunter said in a calm voice.
“Ownership? I always knew you were a bad father, Hunter, but this takes the price. What father knowingly sends his son to jail? Don’t think I don’t know you have connections. If this because of that whore? Honestly, when Simon told me you had taken his castoff to your bed, I thought he was joking. But that would explain it.” Mandy kept going. I flinched at the harsh words. You would think I had got used to them. Hunter straightened up and his free hand gently cupped the back of my head as he held me close, as if he was protecting me from a physical danger.
“Don’t talk about her like that. I don’t fucking care what kind of sewer you spew about me. But you leave Hana out of this. You and Simon have done enough damage to her,” he growled. I felt myself relax, I wasn’t alone against Mandy, Hunter would be there for me.
“Oh my God, so it is true! How sick do you have to be to do this? She is young enough to be your daughter. And stealing your son’s wife? You know the only reason that harlot is with you is for your money and so that she can get her hooks into my son again?” There was a small pause, and then Mandy hissed. “That’s why you made sure my baby is in jail! You wanted to make sure she stayed with you. That is sick, Hunter. Choosing a trollop before your son!” she shouted.
“Listen closely, Mandy. I did not steal Hana from Simon. They were divorced before I even met her. And I know I can’t change your mind on this, but I didn’t send our son to jail. He did that all on his own. This conversation is over,” Hunter said in a dark voice and hung up.
“I’m sorry,” I said when I found my voice..
“You have nothing to apologise for, sweetness,” he reassured me. “I should apologise for making you listen to that garbage.”
“I love you,” I told him.
“I love
you too, Hana. Never forget it. I have a feeling we are in for a wild ride.” I nodded and we stood in silence for a while.
“We will starve if we don’t start dinner soon,” I said. He chuckled, kissed the top of my head and then kissed my lips.
“We always have the draw of menus,” he joked.
ot feel me,
“You don’t fool
ister. You like it when we cook,” I retorted.
“I do,” he confessed. “So, hop to it,” he added and slapped my ass
“Oh, you are in so much trouble,” I said. He laughed as we continued making dinner. When we had eaten and snuggled up on the couch, I looked at him, but then I changed my mind and decided it was better that w just had a relaxing evening.
“Tell me what is on that mind of yours,” he said,
“No. We can have that conversation tomorrow,” I told him.
* like our
our cuddle marathons as much as you do, but we don’t do any of us any favours by ignoring things,” he insisted.
“What will happen now? I have never had something to do with the legal system. I have some idea from tv–shows, but I have no idea how accurate they are.” I told him. He kissed my temple.
Chapter 75
“That’s not a bad question. Simon will get a hearing to sent a bond, if there is one. If his mother can bail him out, she will. Then there will be a arraignment where Simon gets to make a plea. If he is smart, he will make a deal with the prosecution and that will be the end of it,” Hunter explained.
“He won’t do that,” I said.
“You are probably right,” Hunter agreed. “If that is the case, there will be a preliminary hearing followed by a pre–trial. If all that goes as expected, there will be a trial followed by a sentencing.” he continued.
“It sounds like that can drag out over a long time,” I said.
“It can. Especially in small cases it can take a year or more. But I’m suspecting this will be high priority and I think it should be done in a couple of months at most, depending on how long the trial will take.” I hummed.
“Will you be there for the trial?” I asked.
“It depends if I’m being called as a witness or not. If I’m not, I think I will be there,” he told me. “Does it bother you?”
“No. I think you should do what feels right. I don’t mind either way. I’m assuming that I will be called as a witness and I think it means I don’t get to sit in on the trial,” I said.
“Yes, that is true. Would you have wanted to?”
“No. I’m perfectly fine not watching.”
“I know this will affect your life. It already made you burn down a promotion that you liked. I’m sorry for that,” Hunter told me.
“Don’t be. It’s not your fault. And I’m not sure I would have accepted either way. Since you have got my money back, I can start planning my dream again. And I would have felt bad accepting a promotion just to turn around and hand in my resignation a couple of months later,” I said,
“I can understand that. So you are going to open the bakery?” he asked.
“I will, but not right now. I don’t know what the trial will bring both in way of attention and how time consuming it will be. I have a good job, I can wait until everything settles down,” I told him.
“That is smart. Let me know if you need help with anything. Both my top accountant and the head of my lar department like you and would be happy to help with whatever you need. It’s quite imitating if I think about it too long.” he grumbled. I laughed and snuggled a little closer.
“What happened yesterday?” I asked.
“It wasn’t as dramatic as you might think. Anthony had put together what he had found, as had John. Jason, John, and I took a drive with some of our men to the abandoned construction site where Simon had hid his emergency found. It was a good sign that our information was sound. We took your money and left, making sure no one could tell we had been there. When we were on our way back, we told Anthony that he could send all the material we had gathered. It only took a couple of hours. The rest of the day I spent working on other things, waiting to hear from Denny, I knew he would call me once he had got the order to arrest Simon and had done so.”
“Does Danny know you are the one that sent in everything?” I asked him.
“More or less. I haven’t told me, and he hasn’t asked and he won’t. But I would say he has a good idea based on the quality of the work,” Hunter–told me. “What if it’s linked back to you? Will you be in trouble?” I asked. I wasn’t quite sure about the rules of the game yet. Hunter chuckled and pressed a kiss on my temple.
“No, W
sweetness. It’s actually seen as a good thing when you hand over evidence of a crime to the police shoved him in played annoyance.
“I know that. I was
was more thinking in the public eye. What is Mandy start spreading rumours?
“I don’t think she will,” he said with confidence. I was not nearly as sure about it as he sounded. But then, he may know her in a way I didn’t. That thought made me jealous in a way I didn’t think I had in me. Hunter looked at me
“Why does it look like you are getting ready to kill someone?” he asked. “I have never seen that look in your eyes before.”
“I don’t think I’m going to tell you,” I said and felt myself blush out of embracement. I knew Hunter wasn’t interested in his ex. He raised an eyebrow. “I may have felt a little jealous,” she confessed.
“or Mandy? Did you hit your head today? He both looked and sounded astonished
Chapter 75
“I know, I know. It just happened. I know it’s not reasonable.” I said with a sigh.
“It really isn’t, sweetness. I would rather cut my dick off than be with that woman. The only reason I say she won’t go public is that she, and that husband of hers, has more to lose than I do. Simon has used his step–father’s investments and properties for his illegal activities. Rich won’t want that to come out.”
“Oh, okay.”
“Now, what are we going to do about your misdirected jealousy? I’m thinking I need to show you just how focused I am on you,” he told me and kissed me.
“You aren’t well,” 1 panted when we parted. He huffed.
“My fever broke around lunch time. But I think we can work on raising my temperature again.” I smiled and kissed him.
