Chapter 77
It had been a quiet week. I wasn’t disappointed, but I was surprised. The way Hunter and Jason had prepared me, I had expected all hell in break loose. After the first two days, there wasn’t any new information. Simon looked to be doing what he should. The prosecutor hadn’t contacted me or Hunter. As Saturday came around, we slept in. Hunter was back to feeling better, and I was happy that things were settling down.
“How about we get out of the apartment today?” Hunter asked as we were still in bed. I was on my back enjoying the afterglow of an amazing orgasm and he had his head resting on my stomach.
“I think that sounds good. I could use some fresh air after being cooped up for nearly two weeks. Can we stop by my apartment?”
“Sure. I wanted to take you out to lunch, and I saw online that the art galleries are having an open house event. It could be fun to check out,” he suggested.
“That sounds fun,” I agreed.
“And we need to go grocery shopping. I was thinking you could teach me how to use some of those fancy appliances tomorrow if you want.”
“You have planned an amazing day. I would love to join you. Do you think it’s safe?” I asked. The last time Hunter had taken me on a date it had ended up with him in the hospital. I didn’t want a repeat of that incident.
“Don’t worry. You and I are not as desirable to the organised crime organisations at the moment. They know where Simon is so it will be easier to just go after
hin
“And Simon?”
“He would benefit from us going missing,” he agreed. “But I don’t think he would, as it doesn’t take a genius to suspect him if something happens to us. Even if he tries, the men he has access to are no match for me. Smalltime thugs,” Hunter said with confidence.
Okay. Then I say we get ready, have breakfast and get going,” I told him and nudged him to release m
“We have time, Let me enjoy this,” he objected and rubbed his face on my stomach. His beard tickled me and I giggled and squirmed.
It took us almost two hours to leave the apartment. When Hunter parked outside my apartment complex, it felt strange. It had been a long time since I had been there and it didn’t feel like home. We took the stairs, and I unlocked the door. The apartment felt less homely. The air was stale, and I opened a window to let some fresh air inside.
“What can I help with?” Hunter asked. I smiled at him.
“Nothing. I’m just going to see if I can save some of my houseplants and check my mail. Oh, 1 forgot to check the mailbox,” I sighed.
“Give the key to me and I’ll get it. I promise not to read any,” Hunter said and reached out his hand. I gizgled.
“You are welcome to read it. It’s bills and junk mail,” I said as I dropped my keys in his hands.
“Will be right back,” he said, kissed my cheek and disappeared. I smiled as I walked around the apartment with my watering can. Fortunately, most of my houseplants were low maintenance and except for some brown leaves, they looked alright. I heard the front door open and close as I was in the bedroom and when I walked back to the kitchen, Hunter was standing and looking at the mail in his hand.
“Something fun?” I asked as I walked up to him.
“Would you let me open this one?” he asked. He was holding up a brown envelope that didn’t look anything special. It had my name and address on it, it had been handwritten.
“Sure,” I said. I didn’t have anything to hide. “But why?
“It doesn’t have a stamp or any other sign that it was delivered via mail. Lthink it was put in your mailbox directly,” he said.
“Oh, okay
“It’s probably nothing. Maybe a neighbour lewiting you to a block party or something,” he added.
“Sure,” I agreed. None of us believed it. Hunter looked from the envelope to me.
“Why don’t you sit down on the couch and I’ll come over when I have opened it,” he suggested. I hesitated, I didn’t want to have things just happen to me. I wanted to be an active part in my life.

“No. I know you want to protect me from what can be inside that envelope. But I want to be there when you open it, I told him. He nodded and together they walked over to the kitchen counter. Hunter took out one of my knives and carefully used it to cut open the short side of the envelope. He took a plate and put on the counter and tipped the envelope over the plate. Nothing happened. He shook it and a paper slide out. It was folded in half and Hunter carefully opened it up and there was handwritten letters scribbled in untidy lines with what looked like a red marker.
*Don’t be a stupid cunt.
Keep
p your mouth shut.
I will be keeping an eye on you, bitch.”
I took a grip on the back of Hunter’s black t–shirt,
“T–that is red marker, right? I asked. He put his arm around me.
“It is, sweetness. Blood doesn’t stay red like that,” he said as he put down the envelope and took out his phone. As he dialled, he guided me over to the couch and sat down next to me. “Denny, Hana has received a threat that I think is connected to your case.” I heard Hunter say. “Yes, we’re at her apartment, we will wait.”
“Do you think it’s Simon?” I asked as he hung up.
“I think so. I can’t see Aksakov doing this. He is too smart, he knows it would create more problems than it will solve for him. For Aksakov, you aren’t the biggest threat, it’s Simon. Sure, you know about the money, but that information comes from Simon. Even if you don’t talk, if Simon does, it’s over. I might see him trying to intimidate you if he had made Simon disappear. But since he is still here, I would say it’s almost certain it’s Simson. Maybe not by him, but on his orders,” Hunter said and then he rubbed his face with his free hand
“I’m sorry. This was supposed to be our fun day out,” I said,
“It’s not your fault, sweetness. And we will still have our fun day. We will just wait for the detectives and answer some questions, and then we will continue as planned.”
There was a knock on my door. Hunter kissed my temple. “I’ll open,” he said and got up. I looked out into the hallway. He looked through the peephole and reached back to the small of his back as he opened the door with the safety bar still on. “Yes?”
“Agents Moor and Harris,” a voice from the other side of the door said. It looked like Hunter was studying something.
“I’ll just unlock the door,” he said and shut the door to disengage the lock, and then he opened the door fully. “Please come inside.” Hinter came walking with an older man and a woman in her mid thirties by the look of it. They were both wearing dark suits and looked serious. “Hana, this is agent Moor and Hamis,” he said.
“Nice to meet yo

you. I think we should do this in the kitchen. Can I get you something? I don’t have much at home but there’s water, tea or coffee,” I asked as I stood
“Some coffee would be nice,” said the man. I nodded and we all walked into the kitchen. I indicated for them to sit at the table while I made the coffee.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name Mr…?” the woman asked Hunter.
“Gardner, Hunter Gardner, agent Harris,” Hunter said as he sat down opposite them.
“As in Mr Hunting’s father?” she asked.
“That is correct,” he answered as I put the mugs with coffee down.
“Milk, sugar?” I asked. They both declined and I took the seat next to Hunter
“You know we need to ask, but how come we find you in Miss Bishop’s apartment?” agent. Mogg asked.
“We are seeing each other,” I told him.
“Seeing as in romantically?” agent Harris asked. She had a look on her face that told me she was trying to guess the age difference.
“That’s right,” Hunter confirmed. “We were here to check on the apartment as Hana has been staying with me for safety reasons. I was the one that discovered the envelope in her mail,” he continued and nudged the plate with the letter and the envelope over to the agents side of the table. “I have touched the envelope, but nothing else. Hana has not touched it at all.” The detectives turned the plate around so they could read the letters.
“You think this has to do with your husband’s trial?” agent Harris asked.
unter
“Ex–husband,” Hunter and I said of the same time. I smiled at them. “It’s an important detail in all of this. I would prefer if you address him as my ex,” I explained

Agent Moor nodded, but agent Harris looked at me as if she was trying to figure me out. That was fair, I guess, it was her job. It didn’t make the experience pleasant.
“Take me through what happened here tonight,” agent Moor asked.
