Chapter 8
The truth was, I predicted Shane would show up at the banquet.
After all, we grew up together. I was not unfamiliar with his ways.
He was a playboy as well, but he did sincerely care about me back then. For men, the most beautiful woman was always the one who got away
I had just gotten divorced, and the whole Internet had turned against me. It was no wonder he felt bad for
me
“Goodness, that poor lady! She didn’t deserve to meet an asshole husband and bitchy homewrecker like
that
What a joke! I knew that Jonas was a chauvinist pig. Does he think he’s a king? Ordering his manager to torture his wife like that!”
“Isn’t that domestic abuse? We should put both of them behind bars!”
“People like them don’t deserve to appear in the public eye.”
Now it was their turn to withstand the rain of insults.
At the same time, an unknown number blew up my phone. I eventually answered.
“Did you do this, Jeanine?”
“How could I? You and Celine probably offended someone else.”
Jonas paused at my agitated tone and then chuckled. “Are you jealous again? It’s fine, we can renew our marriage as long as you agree to accept Celine’s baby as your own and help me get over this crisis.”
I rubbed my chest and took a few deep breaths to fight back my anger. How revolting.
“What do you want me to do this time?”
His tone was gentle yet cruel. “I’m sure you can’t bear to see those people insult me like that. I’ll trouble you one last time, Jeanine. Film a video debunking those rumors, tell everyone you’re single, and give Celine and me your blessings.”
I wanted to puke. He was planning to use me as a scapegoat again, and he made it sound so matter–of- fact, as though I owed him this much.
He told me there would be a press conference tomorrow. I agreed to attend.
When I arrived at eight o’clock, the reporters were not here yet. Jonas and I were the only ones in the hall.
“All these years, you’ve always been the nicest to me, Jeanine.” He paused, his voice slow and smug. “I’ll treat you right from now on.”
When I loved someone, my feelings were impossible to hide. The same went for my hatred.
I lowered my head so he could not see my expression,
Chapter 8
The reporters started filing in, and the show began.
Jonas was the first to speak. “I invited everyone here to clarify something. Jeanine Smith and I broke ages ago, and we aren’t married.
“Celine and I are in our honeymoon period. All those rumors online are merely slander.
“Jeanine is here right now. You can ask her if you have any questions.”
up
He threw me to the wolves again without a moment’s hesitation. His stance was that the leaks were all fake news, and if anyone kept spreading them, he would take legal action against them.
The reporters surrounded me. One woman asked curiously, “Is Jonas telling the truth?”
I forced a teary smile, like a tender flower caught in a storm. “He’s lying. He was my husband, and now he has an affair baby with Celine Jones. I’ll swear on every word in court.”
There was an uproar. Jonas panicked, explaining in disbelief, “Sorry, everyone. Her condition is acting up again! She developed schizophrenia after we broke up
He even took out a medical report. It was not a bad plan, accusing me of mental illness so everyone would disregard what I said.
He then ordered his bodyguards to gag me and drag me away. That was just what the world was like. Only the strong had the right to speak.
He came prepared… but I was not going to lose.
“Don’t you dare lay a hand on her.”
The voice that reached my ears was Shane’s. He had brought an army of lawyers and guards with him. My parents were with him, too.
