Chapter 5
No matter how much Shaun called after me, I did not look back
After I got to the hospital and spoke with the doctor about my mother’s condition, he sighed in concern. “Y mother’s illness is quite rare. We’ve done our best.
“If she doesn’t wake up this year, there’s a good chance that…”
I fell silent
I already knew the answer deep down, so when I heard the bad news, I did not react too strongly.
“This year?”
I had lost everything this year.
It looked like I was about to lose my only family too.
After thinking for a while, the doctor advised me against transferring her to another hospital
Mrs. Johnston has arranged for the best doctor in Soriah for your mother. Under her care, there might still
be hope. If she’s moved to Jorath, there won’t be any hope left at all.”
I listened to his advice.
I thanked the doctor and got ready to leave.
- But when I stepped outside, I saw Reina standing at the door.
I did not know how long she had been there.
When Reina saw me, her face did not change much
Let’s talk
Reina took me to a private cafe.
“What would you like to drink?”
I shook my head. “No, thanks. Just get to the point.”
She stirred her coffee cup
Theard you bought a house in Jorath Are you planning to live there?
“You’re my daughter, after all. If your adoptive mother doesn’t make it this year, I hope you’ll stay in Soriah if she passes. That way, I can take care of you-*
I interrupted, “Just tell me what you want. You’ve ignored me all these years, and now you say this? Isn’t that ridiculous?
Reina sighed. “Believe it or not, that is how I feel. Shaun talked to me. He looks much thinner. You know he’s very picky with food and only eats what you cook.”

I snorted and said, “So, that’s what this is about.”
Then, I stood up. “I’m sorry, but we should end our talk here. I only want to take my mom back to Jorath. As for the rest, I don’t care, and it’s not my responsibility.”
She quickly stood up, flustered, and explained, “Quiana, that’s not what I meant.”
I coldly said, “Goodbye, Mrs. Johnston.”
I did not want to argue with her and left the coffee shop.
I was already disappointed in Reina from a long time ago, so I did not feel sad about this.
When I reached the bus stop, I felt lost and did not know where to go..
I checked my phone and made a call.
“Mr. Jacob, can you please help take care of Dobby? I have some things to handle in Soriah and won’t be back anytime soon.”
Charles Jacob, my new neighbor, quickly agreed.
“Don’t worry, Quiana. I’ll take good care of Dobby.”
After talking for a while on the phone, I noticed Shaun standing nearby.
I frowned in annoyance:
He walked over to me with an expression I could not read.
“I heard about your adoptive mom. Do you have a place to stay in Soriah? Do you need my help?”
“I don’t need anything from you,” I said. “Shaun, have you forgotten? We’re divorced.”
He looked flustered. “Jaxon hasn’t been happy lately. He’s even ignoring his favorite toy car. Could you come back to see him?”
“You’re all driving me crazy! Can’t you just leave me alone?!” All the frustration I had been holding in finally burst forth.
“Shaun, you promised me a home. I fell for your lies and risked my life to have Jaxon! For years, I worked hard to take care of you and him. I did everything myself because I believed you. I thought I had a home!”
As I said, tears streamed down my cheeks.
I was not crying for him but for myself because I had been tricked for so many years.
“What did I do so wrong? Why has everyone left me? Even my son, whom I gave everything for, doesn’t want me anymore. He wants someone else to be his mom!”
