Chapter 27 

SEAN. 

Not returning home would have brought on more suspicion, so I was forced to come back. However, my wife seems to have changed. 

She is withdrawn, and usually, when I refuse to have breakfast with her and Finn, she’s come to plead with me. 

Now, she’s staring intently at her phone, seemingly lost in a universe where I no longer exist 

to her. 

Might this be because I refused to give her some money? It was her fault around the car over. There is no reason why I should have to give her money to get some random man’s car fixed. 

My phone beeps in my pocket and I pull it out to see who it is. My heart thuds in my chest as I see Sarah’s name flashing across my screen. I fumble with the phone and it slips out of my grasp, hitting the ground with a crash. 

My gaze inadvertently rises and I find Anna watching me with dark eyes. She tracks my every movement as if she can see right through me, read into my heart and see the things that lie inside–my waning affection for her and my growing lust for another. 

Then those eyes drop to my phone lying on the floor between us and her eyebrows rise askance. “You won’t pick it up?” she asks. 

The first time I slept with Sarah I had felt guilt and shame. It was the first time I had come home in a long time with flowers and gifts for Anna. She smiled without questions, pressing a kiss to my cheeks and her hands that were around my neck were reluctant to leave. 

It didn’t make me want her any more than I did my secretary, whose creamy thighs had been hung around my neck only hours earlier. 

Why do I cheat on my beautiful wife? It could be because she smells like Finn’s puke most of the time. Or that she rarely gives me what I want in bed. 

I don’t respond as I lean down and pick up my phone, sliding up the button and pressing it against my ear. “Mr. Bradley,” I say and Sarah giggles. 

“Your wife is there with you?” she asks with a low purr that has

“I am afraid so,” I say, shifting in my chair. “My schedule has been tight. Perhaps, we may discuss the investment some other time?” I ask, and when Sarah laughs again, I know she got the meaning behind my cryptic response. 

*I won’t be able to make it today. Perhaps another time.* 

Chapter 

“Pity,” she murmurs, and her voice is breathy and small. “I put on the red lingerie for you.” 

My gaze 

to Anna almost immediately, and I try and fail to picture my wife in red lingerie. I can only see Sarah in it, the straps holding her skin appreciatively, and her legs 

parted wide as she waits for me. 

I swallow, stifling the urge to cuss. 

I nod. “And where might the meeting be held?” 

“Oh,” Sarah says playfully, “we could try the shower this time. Or we could wait again for the next time your wife isn’t home. Your bed, it smells absolutely amazing.” 

“Tempting offer,” I mutter, furrowing my brows in false concentration, as I can feel Anna watching me in her peripheral vision. “I will speak to the boss and get back to you soon.” 

Anna straightens from the couch when I end the call, and she strides for me, dropping a white envelope on the table in front of me. I stare down at it. “What is this?” 

“My application letter. You said to find a job. How did I do?” Her voice is deceptively soft, and I pull the letter out of the envelope, reading each line, and my fingers start to tremble. 

Anna’s resume is even better than mine, no matter that she hasn’t worked in years. A professional, that is what she used to be. No company would look at her level of experience and turn her down. 

But that isn’t what has me shaking with anger. 

It is the company name to which she applies that has me rising out of my seat in indignation. 

“Spears Inc.?! You’re applying for the position of CFO?! Have you lost your mind? You’re applying to become my boss?!” 

Anna only watches me with wide, innocent eyes. “Why, is there a problem with that? I wish to relieve you of the stress of having to cater to the family alone.” 

“Whatever happened to the position of a clerk or secretary?!” 

Her demeanor remains calm. “You and I know that the pay for either won’t even cover for half the rent. Finn will need his school fees paid soon as well. It is obvious that you cannot afford either.” 

“Stop talking nonsense! You will stay here and take care of Finn! It is all you know how to do anyway!” I yell, tossing the sheet aside. 

Something dangerous flickers in Anna’s eyes as she picks up the letter, and she starts to speak when the doorbell rings. 

Before heading to the door she holds up the letter in front of me, leaning into my space. ” There is a lot more I can do than you realize.”

She tosses a letter on the table and walks toward the front door, peeping into the hole. Her body suddenly tenses and I saunter over, standing by the door with her. 

“Who is that?” I ask but she doesn’t respond, only to pull the door knobs and pulls the door 

open. 

May stands by the door, nibbling nervously on her lower lip and I go cold when I notice the figure standing behind her. 

That can’t be right. 

I would know that face and build anywhere. I had only ever had the privilege of meeting him once years ago, when I had accompanied my previous boss to an award event. 

It is why I know I must be daydreaming. 

Because there is no way the Anderson family heir is by the porch of my home, staring down at my sister–in–law fondly. A legend in the business world; a man not only powerful but untouchable. A man whose reputation and name precede him. 

Chase Anderson. An enigma. A force of a man who commands respect and shakes tables. One word from him could build or break any business empire. A man whose net worth can no longer be restricted by mere billions, and that isn’t even adding into perspective the inheritance he has left untouched for ages. 

That man is standing in front of my home in slacks and a simple t–shirt, and I would say he looks middle class right now, were it not for the watch around his wrist. It is a simple design, nothing flashy, but I have visited a jewelry store and I know that it costs more than my 

life’s 

savings. 

Steel grey eyes lift from May’s, observing Anna and I, and the man encircles his arm around May’s waist, tugging her closer into him. 

May blushes, hiding her face in his shirt. 

He then ducks his head politely. “We must apologize for the suddenness of our visit, but it is long overdue.” He stretches out a hand in front of Anna. “I am Ethan Chase. May’s husband.” My lips part. There is no way in hell that this is the man May married. 

Chapter 28
