Chapter 18
Kelsey was terrified but didn’t dare to run. She was drowning in debt, and if she couldn’t get money from Nathan, she knew it would be a dead end when her creditors found her.
Meanwhile, Nathan listened as the housekeeper revealed what had happened that day. “Ms. White intentionally put lipstick marks on herself which led Kathy to misunderstand.”
At this point, everything was clear.
Lipstick marks on the body would easily be mistaken for hickeys.
Kelsey watched as Nathan ended the call and turned to Kevin, signaling him with a simple hand gesture. “Take care of her. I don’t want to see her again.”
Kevin understood immediately. He moved in with others to restrain Kelsey and stop her from crying out and trying to approach Nathan.
Nathan got into his car alone and sped toward Kathleen’s current residence as quickly as possible.
He had to find her and clear up all the misunderstandings. Even if she still wouldn’t forgive him or choose to be with him, at the very least, she wouldn’t run off with someone else so
soon.
But he was too late.
No matter how long Nathan rang the doorbell, the place remained silent, and no response
came.
Desperately, he called out loudly, “Kathy, it’s me!”
A clicking sound came from behind him. A neighbor, a middle–aged woman who was disturbed by the commotion, had come out to check.
She said to him, “Sir, please stop causing a disturbance. There’s no one there anymore.”
Nathan froze and asked, “Have they gone out?”
The neighbor shook her head. “No, they moved out just recently. The young lady said she was going to get married to her boyfriend while traveling. Didn’t you know-”
Before she could finish, Nathan had already dashed away and disappeared from sight.
He drove straight to the nearest airport, calling Kathleen countless times along the way. Nevertheless, each call only reached the automated message, and she never picked up.
Just then, Kevin called and reported, “Mr. Meyer, Ms. White has taken a lot of online loans. After I sent her back to the country, her creditors immediately took her away.”
Nathan had no concern for Kelsey. Through gritted teeth, he ordered, “Send people to all nearby airports. Even if they have to turn every stone, stop Kathleen from leaving the country!
“Alright, Mr. Meyer,” Kevin responded.
“Oh, and-” Nathan suddenly remembered something. When Kathleen had flown to Milsworth, he hadn’t been able to find her booking information.
“She might not be using her real name. She has a Sangorean passport with the name Jane Xenakis,” Nathan said.
“Okay, I’ll get everyone looking immediately,” Kevin replied.
Soon, three days passed. Even though Nathan had dispatched everyone under his command to search for Kathleen, there was no trace of her anywhere.
This time, she had disappeared even more thoroughly than before.
Nathan endured three days without sleep, food, or water.
Soon, the news reached Clive, who felt worried for him. He called Nathan to offer support. ” Mr. Meyer-”
When the call connected, Nathan hurriedly asked, “Is there news of Kathy?”
“No, not yet. I’m calling because of you. If you keep going like this, you won’t hold up,” Clive advised patiently. “I don’t know how things got so tense between you two, but she made a good point. She’s an adult now, so she has the right to make her own choices in life.”
Sitting alone in the darkness, Nathan listened to Clive. He heard each word clearly, but he couldn’t bring himself to accept it.
Kathleen left so abruptly this time that even Clive didn’t know where she was. She was truly done giving him chances.
Meanwhile, in a quaint cottage in the countryside, Kathleen was relaxing with her eyes closed. She was soaking up the autumn sun. Nice sunny days like these had been rare since fall began.
David was nearby, polishing some camera equipment. When he saw Kathleen had dozed off, he quietly lifted the camera and snapped a picture.
Kathleen had an ear finely tuned to the sound of a shutter. She immediately sat up and leaned over to say, “Let me see. If you took an ugly picture of me, I won’t let it slide.”
“Here, have a look.” David handed her the camera.
Kathleen smiled in satisfaction. “Not bad. It’s quite a nice shot. I forgive you.”
Her good mood made David laugh along. “Don’t forget that I’m also Mr. Atwood’s student. In terms of age, I’m your senior.”
