ag added made
As I pondered this, my plate was filling up with all the foods I loathed, especially mushrooms, which made me want to gag. “Ahhh, Yvette, I’m going to get you back for this!” I silently raged in my mind.
Alex, seeing our little exchange, laughed heartily. “You two are really something. By the way, the chef made pumpkin soup. Go and have some.”
He then instructed someone to clean up, adding, “It’s getting late; you should stay the night. It’s not safe to drive home now.”
I nearly jumped out of my chair. “Alex, I still have something to take care of tonight. I need to go back.” I quickly glanced at Yvette, hoping she would back me up, but she calmly continued to enjoy her meal, showing no interest in helping.
At this point, I had no choice but to continue this “battle at the dinner table“.
What was she playing at? Did she want to sleep in the same bed with me tonight?
Alex, noticing my hesitation, frowned. “What’s so urgent? I’ll take care of it. You haven’t been home to spend time with me in forever.”
Seeing how serious he was, I couldn’t help but soften. “Alright, I’ll stay and chat with you for a bit.”
As soon as I agreed, his face lit up like a flower. I suspected he might have been pretending to be pitiful just to get me to stay.
Yvette, who had been silent this whole time, didn’t show any change in expression as she watched me give in.
Alex didn’t like having too many people around the house, so it was just him, the housekeeper, and the cook, who came and went. After dinner, I rolled up my sleeves to start cleaning the dishes, but Alex stopped me. “You always do this. Let her do it tonight.” He gave Yvette a stern look. “What are you waiting for? Go wash the dishes!”
I couldn’t help but feel a little smug At home, she didn’t lift a finger, but here, at Alex’s place, she couldn’t ignore it.
Sure enough, Yvette glanced at the messy table and sighed. “Fine.” She then rolled up her sleeves, revealing a fair, delicate arm.
Once she went into the kitchen, Alex started lecturing me. “Owen, you spoil her too much. Sometimes you need to be firm, give her some fresh challenges, so she’ll depend on you more and not be so domineering,”
Alex was right. But well, after the divorce, she wouldn’t be in a position to “dominate” me anymore. I smiled and nodded. “Got it.”
Alex continued, “Yvette is a good girl. She’s thoughtful, smart, and capable. If you can win her heart, you’ll have an easy life. I hope you two can make it work…”
Chapter 49 Same Bed
My marriage to Yvette was strictly a family alliance–a decision orchestrated by Alex, who’d taken it upon himself to be my relationship strategist, Ite was always coming up with “brilliant” schemes to ensure Yvette would be all mine. And every time, I’d promise to try his ideas out, giving him that reassuring smile, pretending they were working like magic though in truth, I’d never had the guts to actually follow through
Everyone knew that our marriage was just for show. Alex probably understood the situation perfectly but chose not to confront me about it directly. Every time he’d bring it up, I’d feel a twinge of mixed emotions.
It could only manage to win her over, lite might actually be pretty great. I mean, just look at Randall–he was now basking in a life of pure bliss.
But, I’d accepted reality. There was no point in expecting Yvette to fall for me. Women were unpr
edictable. Better to focus on myself and my goals. I looked at Alex and said, “Don’t worry. Alex. I’ll keep trying.”
Alex’s face lit up. “Good! Now, don’t waste any more time. You two are sleeping in the same room tonight–take advantage of the opportunity! Make sure I’ll be bouncing a great grandkid
on my knee so.”
