Chapter 8
Alpha Leon
It really was him.
“You look awful,” I said, returning his wallet to his pocket while studying his face. Even weakened, he had a striking presence–tall, broad–shouldered, and strong.
“No big deal. Just in heat,” he replied nonchalantly.
I froze mid–step, halfway to helping him to the bed.
“In heat?” Should I make a run for it?
Before I could decide, he seemed to sense my hesitation. His hand shot out, gripping

my arm with surprising speed, and in a swift motion, he pulled me closer and tossed me onto the bed.
“Too late for that,” he said, his voice low and laced with amusement.
The soft mattress cushioned my fall, but before I could bounce up, he was on top of me, pinning me down.
“If you’re not planning to break off the engagement and we’re fate mate, could you at least help me out?” he murmured, his eyes boring into mine.
I opened my mouth to protest but found myself at a loss. I didn’t want to end the engagement, but being in such an intimate position with someone I’d only just met felt overwhelming.

My silence seemed to satisfy him. “Good. You’re not leaving” he muttered, leaning in before I could react.
Two hours later, I sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing my sore wrist and glaring at the man beside me. Alpha Leon was sprawled across the mattress, fast asleep, his chest rising and falling steadily.
“Beast,” I muttered under my breath. My wolf let out a playful huff, clearly entertained by the whole ordeal.
I reached for a pillow, fully prepared to smack him awake, but a sudden knock at the door stopped me.
“Nancy? Leon?”

My brother’s voice made me jump.
Alpha Leon stirred, groaning as he stretched lazily. Still half–asleep, he rolled out of bed, cracked the door open, and yanked my brother inside before collapsing back onto the mattress.
My brother’s eyes darted between us, his expression a mix of shock and outrage. “I wanted you two to get to know each other- not this close!”
“Shut up,” Alpha Leon mumbled weakly, burying his face in the pillow.
My brother clenched his fists, clearly struggling to keep his composure. “Snapping at me, are we? Just what have you done to my sister? Engaged or not, you don’t have to act like a damn animal!”

Seeing his hand balling up, I quickly intervened. “Brother, it’s not what you think!”
“Then what *is* it?” he demanded, glaring at
- me.
I coughed awkwardly. We hadn’t gone that far, but we had done things you’d never do with just a friend. How was I supposed to explain that?
While I fumbled for words, Alpha Leon finally spoke up.
“You know about my family situation. I got caught up in their schemes this time and I had no other choice.”
Although my brother’s brows were still furrowed, he finally let it go.

On the way back, I couldn’t contain my curiosity. “What did Leon mean about his family? What’s going on?”
My brother sighed, his face darkening. “It’s messy. His family runs the Eclipse Pack, one of the most powerful in the region. The patriarch–his grandfather–is ready to hand over control to Leon, but there’s a catch. Leon has to marry to secure a strong alliance.”
I nodded, listening intently.
“But not everyone’s thrilled about it,” he continued. “Leon’s second aunt, in particular, has been causing trouble. She thinks the Eclipse Pack should be split between her husband and Leon’s father. But her husband’s an idiot, and his father’s no better. The two of them couldn’t manage a

lemonade stand, let alone a pack.”
I stifled a laugh at his bluntness.
“She’s been scheming for years, and now that Leon is next in line, she’s desperate. She’s even been using her own son some fresh–faced pup barely old enough to shift- as a pawn to sabotage Leon’s engagement.”
