Chapter 9
Alpha Leon only got tricked because he didn’t suspect his own cousin, which made me sigh.
Life in wealthy families. always seemed so full of drama, unlike my simple family background. We’ve been a single–child family for nine generations. until my parents finally had me.
Lost in thought, I was startled when my brother’s phone rang. Glancing at the screen, I saw the caller ID: **Alpha Esmond.**
My brother was busy negotiating a sharp turn. “Can you answer that for me? Put it on speaker.”
I hesitated briefly but complied.

Alpha Esmond’s voice burst through the speaker, urgent and sharp, barely waiting for the call to connect. “Alpha Kendrick, has your sister returned yet?”
My brother grinned, entirely unbothered. “Yeah, she’s back. How’d you know?”
There was a pause on the line before Alpha Esmond spoke again, his tone shifting to one of caution. “Could you… could you let me speak with her? I need to ask her something.”
My brother’s grin turned mischievous. “Go ahead. She’s right here and can hear you.”
There was a long silence from Alpha Esmond and then he asked carefully, “Nancy, could we talk alone?”
My brother’s expression hardened. He shot

me a quick sidelong glance, his tone laced with suspicion.
“What’s so private that I can’t hear, Esmond? Don’t tell me you’re about to ask her advice on winning back that ‘runaway mate‘ of yours, Omega Carly?”
Alpha Esmond let out a weary sigh. “It’s not like that. Carly rejected me a long time ago. That’s all in the past.”
“Nancy, please. I just need a few minutes to explain.”
That was the last straw for my brother. He slammed on the brakes, pulling the car to a screeching halt by the side of the road.
“Esmond, don’t push it” my brother growled, his voice low and dangerous. “I know how many years you’ve obsessed over Omega

Carly. You went through five–no, *six*– stand–ins trying to replace her. And now you think you can just move on to my sister? She’s my *sister*! I’ve treated you like a brother for years, but don’t make me regret it. Don’t make me come over there and knock some sense into you.”
Without waiting for a response, he hung up and tossed the phone into the console, ignoring its persistent buzzing as it rang again.
He turned to me, his expression a mix of frustration and concern. “What’s going on between you two? I thought you said you barely knew him.”
Seeing there was no way to avoid it, I told him everything that had happened over the past few years.

When I finished, his face was red with anger. After a long silence, he wiped a tear from his eye and hugged me.
“It’s not your fault; I just made a poor choice in friends. I should’ve told you about Omega Carly. Then you wouldn’t have fallen so deep into this.”
I shook my head, feeling a soft warmth in my heart.
“I was the foolish one. After seven years of him hiding me from his life and never coming to meet you, I should’ve seen the signs.
He ruffled my hair gently. “Don’t worry; things will get better now. Alpha Leon is reliable–I’ll stake my life on it.”

Alpha Esmond was always a proud man, so I thought that after my brother‘ s tirade, we’d never see each other again.
But the next morning, while our family was having breakfast, a servant announced that someone at the door was asking to see me by name.
When I went out, I saw Alpha Esmond standing there, dressed in my favorite suit, holding a bouquet, and smiling warmly at
- me.
“Nancy, I’ve been thinking about things. I shouldn’t have acted like that the other day or hurt you.
“It’s not what you think with Omega Carly. She’s just a friend to me now. If you’re unhappy with it, I won’t see her anymore.

“Words are cheap,” she reminded me. “What about his actions?”
