She ran over, clinging tightly to his arm, practically leaning her whole body against him.
“Are
e you feeling better from the allergy?
Lucas brushed aside the hair from her forehead, checking her carefully.
“Much better,” Lydia smiled, her eyes bright. “Lucas, please don’t be mad at my sister,”
She hugged his arm a little tighter.
“It was really my own fault. If my health weren’t so weak, Dad wouldn’t have made me switch rooms with my sister.”
She wouldn’t have taken out her anger on me…
“This isn’t your fault; she’s just narrow–minded.”
Lucas glanced at me, then deliberately pulled Lydia into his arms.
“Let’s go inside. Your face just headed, don’t stay out in the wind.”
“Okay.”
I watched them walk away, clinging to each other as close as twins, but I felt nothing.
After
my
mother’s death anniversary passed, my father didn’t come to take me home.
Then, before I knew it, Lucas’s birthday arrived.
If this were any other year, I would’ve already planned his birthday gift, worked hard to book a nice venue, and carefully decorated it all.
But this time, I didn’t prepare a gift..
I wasn’t going to celebrate his birthday.
At five in the afternoon, I was on my way to the airport.
Messages kept popping up on my phone.
My father was pressing me: “Why aren’t you here yet? Your aunt, Lydia, and I are all here.”
“Jennifer, be the bigger person. Lucas is going to be part of our family.”
“If you don’t show up, what will people think? They’ll believe you two sisters aren’t getting along.”
I laughed to myself, finding it absurd. I didn’t reply and simply blocked him.
Just as I was about to board, a message came through
It was from Lucas.
“Why aren’t you here? Everyone’s waiting for you.”
I smiled, said nothing, and blocked all his contacts too.
Then, I walked through the boarding gate and never looked back

It was already seven o’clock, but Lucas still hadn’t started the birthday party.
He sat on the sofa, casually playing with a lighter, his expression calm.
Every so often, he’d check the time on his watch, or unlock his phone screen.
“Lucas,” Lydia bit her lip and gently tugged on his sleeve.
“‘s getting late, and everyone’s hungry.”
Lucas locked at her, smiling, but there was something off–it didn’t seem like a genuine smile.
“Or maybe you’re the one who’s hungry,” he teased, pinching her cheek
“I’m starving! I just want some cake. Lydia leaned into him with a giggle
Lucas caught a faint, famillar scent.
He paused and asked quietly, “What perfume are you wearing
from
40b, I just grabbed some dressing room at home,” Lydia replied, a little surprised. “Is something wrong? Does it smell bad?”
Lures shook his head. “No, it’s nice”
smelled just be the perfume Jennifer always wore
But he couldn’t quite remember the brand at the moment
As everyone laughed and started a playful cake fight, Lucas stepped out onto the balcony with a cigarette.
His phone was still silent, no replies, just an empty screen.
He remembered Jennifer once t
she’d never miss one of his birthdays again.
But she had broken that promise so quickly.
Lucas’s gaze darkened, and he smirked coldy.
“Jenifer, are you dead? Can’t you reply to a message
