Chapter 28
A few days later, Layla walked into the office and immediately saw a familiar person sitting on
the chair.
This was someone she had always held in her heart since childhood, someone she wanted to thank when she grew up.
As a child, she thought of Jenna as the kind, gentle mother like the ones in the movies. Because of her sponsorship, the orphanage had better living conditions.
But later, she discovered the ugly face behind that gentle demeanor.
Layla’s gaze lingered on Jenna for a few seconds before she said coldly, “Do you need something from me?”
Jenna immediately stood up and bent down to pat Daisy on the head. “Is she your daughter? She’s as beautiful as you.
Layla forced a smile and replied, “Thank you.”
Jenna picked up a doll and handed it to Daisy, her voice soft. “This is a gift from Grandma. Do you like it?“|
Daisy looked at the doll and was about to reach out and take it.
But before that, she raised her eyes to look at Layla. Her bright eyes blinked as if asking for her mother’s approval.
Layla gently rubbed her head and whispered, “What did Mommy tell you about accepting things from strangers?”
Upon hearing this, Daisy immediately waved her little hands, refusing the gift from Jenna.
Jenna’s expression turned dark. “Layla, we’ve been in a mother–in–law relationship before. You really can’t accept a gift for your daughter?”
Layla sneered and asked, “What kind of relationship do we have? It’s just an excuse for you to use the guise of a mother–in–law to manipulate me openly.”
Jenna was taken aback, her expression darkening. She hadn’t expected Layla to become so sharp–tongued.
The Layla she knew used to be so obedient and dutiful. How could she have changed so much after four years?
Jenna reined in her emotions and said, “Let me be straightforward. This is a five million- dollar cheque. Take it, quit your job, and leave this city. Go as far away as possible.”
Seeing the check, Layla’s smile grew more mocking. “What’s this supposed to mean, Jenna?

You gave me a check before to get me to divorce, and now you’re offering me another check to leave. Is my life just meant to be controlled by you?”
Jenna replied, “Layla, I’ve asked Horace. Your monthly salary is only five thousand dollars, and even with bonuses, your annual salary is just around 100 thousand dollars.‘

She added, “This check will allow you to stay with your daughter and focus on her treatment without the need to struggle like you do now, taking her to school. Why not consider it?”
Chapter 28
Jenna dropped the facade of kindness and her voice turned forceful. “Layla, I had a way to
make you leave the Parker family before. Now, I have a way to make you leave here too. Don’t force me to take drastic measures.”
Layla’s expression grew colder. “What if I don’t agree?”
